Whitmarsh doesnt seem to like him, I cant speak for the rest of McLaren as we rarely see the rest of the staff reacting with the drivers. But Whitmarsh may just have to grit his teeth and put up with him as long as he he keeps banging in the pole positions, dragging an off song car up the grid and winning races.

Oh, I thought you were going to go with; on the other hand, it's his job to get the most out of his drivers.

But that would be incompatible to him being paid to like Lewis if getting the most out of his drivers is dependent on it, the hands anaolgy is used to show two apparently conflicting arguments that have to be balanced against it each other, not one argument resolutely defeating the other.

I agree, so that's why I mentioned what I did. Balance is unfortunately is something you don't always get right the first time. That's why maybe McLaren offered what they did and now they're trying to balance things out. Make an offer that will be suitable, versus Making an offer that's a sound business decision. He's not paid to like the guy but he's is paid to get results, apparently McLaren feels that Lewis leaving is not their desired result.

It sure isn't desirable, the price that is higher is preferable to Lewis leaving from Mclaren's point of view, yet not as preferable as the original offer, personally I don't think the price offered is a reflection of how much Whitmarsh likes Lewis. Lewis will have to decide is the new price is acceptable, I'm not arguing Mclaren wouldn't like Lewis to remain, I'm saying they want to pay as little as possible for that to occur, and since Ferrari and Redbull aren't offering, they figure they are in a good bargaining position on their offer in terms other than driver salary, hence an initially lower salary offer before Mercedes had made one.

The most important question (if he's serious about winning) is the risk he's taking STAYING with this failure of a team which has won 1 WDC in over a decade. If Mercedes are offering Lewis a similar pay packet plus a chance to build a team around him (like Alonso has with Ferrari) I'd be dissapointed if Lewis stayed where he is. I believe he's serious when he says he's making a decision based on chances of winning, then why not take a chance with another team with plenty of potential (and has a Ross Brawn) rather than staying with a brand just boasting a successful history and achieved almost nothing in this millennium.

I mean, the news every weekend is public to everyone...Lewis acted on his teams' advise that weekend whilst Jenson went the other route (as he always does since on equal terms he's lost anyway).....did you even read this piece of news or just commenting for the sake of it?

Every team has their lean spells; look at Ferrrari during the 80s and early 90s before Schumacher turned around their fortunes. McLaren will bounce back and probably win a series of titles.

Why guess on a team when another potentially has a great advantage in 2 years (being a primary team and full manufacturer of car and engine) and could be offering a very influential role in the team compared to where you are at present?

He needs to win 3. That means 2 more...and he probably knows its impossible the way Mclaren build their race cars these days.
