......When you add them to your work related stuff you are being professional and taking responsibility for what you're writing. Not showing off.

How is adding 3 letters 'taking responsibility' for what you write ......?

I can agree in certain medical fields it can add weight to what you are writing, but apart from that.....

First off: the fact you say adding 'phd' is showing off, makes me think you clearly do not gave one (phd). Therefore, how can you say something is showing off when you dont know it for yourself? To me it sounds much more like YOU feel someone is showing off when they add phd or whatever...

Secondly, and most importantly, when you add them to your work texts; for example P Eng or MD you are effectively saying that your opinion is based on your professional understanding of the matter. So, basically, instead of saying... That's my 2 cents worth, you're saying 'thats my $195/ hr opinion', and you can rely on it being so, because... that is what's expected from you in a work related mail or whatever.

When you add it in a Formula 1 forum, talking about how annoying Vettel's #1 finger is...... Its showing off.

OK then, how about if on your CV you say you god a PHD and your applying for a school cleaners job. could if be a negative thing?

(they are the extremes before people start asking why someone with that qualification be doing that job!)

Shows what you know... a PhD would say index finger.
Other than things like that, why would you ever really need to mention your qualifications?

I'll reserve my judgement on that.

That's when you tell them you're struggling with an alcohol addiction problem.

on your cv for sure use it. Mostly because you HAVE to also have it under your 'education' field. Of course, that leaves sone explaining to do if you're applying for janitor, but there should be a reasonable explanation... like for example you have a PhD in x field, but frankly, you have more experience in Y field and there's more opportunities etc. that's totally understandable. So unless it takes away too much, use them.

Being over qualified for a job is ussualy bad, but there are situations where it makes sense. And other times the potential employer may see it as a good thing in that he will be paying less for more. It all depends on the situation.

On a CV, if relevant, definitely use them.

In your email signature at work, no don't use them, you look like a show off.......

I think the if relevant I think is the answer

it's never showing off if it's a PhD.

If I ever get a Ph.D. I'm sticking that sh1t where ever I can

YO!! Every webber fan has a Ph.D. in how annoying vettel's #1 finger is :(:(:(

Other than things like that, why would you ever really need to mention your qualifications?

In my experience, mentioning your qualifications has a negative effect :hehe: I have a bachelor's degree in justice studies and whenever I throw my 2 cents in about some social/civil rights/justice issue or subject and people ask wtf I would know about it, and I mention that I only spent several hours a day for 4 years of my life studying such issues, I get scoffed at. So I don't even bother any more. I just let ignorance spew from MF'ers mouths and nod
