Yep, just heard of it as well....here's a little excerpt about the Prof.

Eric Sidney Watkins OBE,FRCS, commonly known within the Formula One fraternity as Professor Sid or simply Prof (born 6 September 1928), is a world-renowned English neurosurgeon.
Watkins served twenty-six years as the FIA Formula One Safety and Medical Delegate, head of the Formula One on-track medical team, and first responder in case of a crash. He helped to save the lives of many drivers including Gerhard Berger, Martin Donnelly, Érik Comas, Mika Häkkinen and Karl Wendlinger. Watkins was also known for his friendship with driver Ayrton Senna until the death of the latter.
He is married with four sons and two daughters.

Condolences to a very important individual in Formula 1, he will be missed. RIP.

The Wikipedia article has his personal details showing him having died today aged 84.

Sad news indeed. Hopefully F1 and motorsport in general will honour him given his contributions to safety improvements.

I thought their times in f1 didn't overlap at all. unless jackie was doing safety stuff after retirement and Sid was perhaps on the scene prior to his official entry? ESPNF1 says he started in 78. I read his book but I can't remember anything from it in terms of dates etc. Iremember a couple of tidbits from it like how Bernie left his own helicopter at sid's disposal when he started, and how he tried to get Senna to quit at Imola. But that is also mentioned in a couple of other books as well as quoted in ESPNF1's obit.
