We can never know that now, can we? Vettel's and Grosjean's car stopped working because of the SC period. Here, Vettel had to do the drive through penalty. Maybe that caused the problems.

Weren't they telling Vettel that he had to cool the engine on the warm up lap? It seems that something was at least badly configured from early on.

The cooling of the engine was because it was the used engine, unlike all the other teams had. They chose to run with this one, knowing that they are underpowered, no matter what, and saving this engine for future fridays. That's why they told him to stop 6 laps before the end. They wanted to preserve the engine.

Managed to catch the race on the BBC after returning back to London. Pretty chuffed to see Lewis Hamilton take the victory and move up to 2nd in the WDC, but Button's retirement was another disaster for McLaren's WCC bid. Once again, the team only get one car to the finish. Head-banging times.

The only consolation for McLaren, of course, is that an under-par Red Bull team got neither car to the end of the race. Imagine how much closer the Woking team would've been to RBR though, had it not been for Button's DNF. :banghead:

Fernando Alonso was on top form as usual, and Massa wasn't too bad, although had the race lasted for a few more laps, he would certainly have been passed by a rapidly closing Raikkonen and Schumacher.

Perez' rise to second was magical to watch, and I'm very pleased for the Sauber team, after both of their cars were wiped out in La Source last weekend.

The main talking point coming out of this race is the penalty for Vettel with regard to the incident with Alonso. Ironically, the penalty had no outcome whatsoever on the final result, but it's interesting when you compare the incident with Vettel's successul pass on Alonso at the very same place in 2011. Vettel was also put on the grass, and I wonder... if the pass had been unsuccessful, maybe a different outlook would've been taken. (See my previous note on the comparison between Schumacher/Barrichello 2010 and the pile-up at La Source). Outcomes certainly carry much weight when the decisions are made.

almost with every race that goes by ,ferrari and alonso gives me reasons, to hate them even more... :shtstorm:
You may tell me whatever you want about recent changes to the rules and stuff... but I watch F1 since 1994 and Vettel here did nothing that deserved a penalty, did anyone asked him, if he had the grip at that speed to turn tighter in the corner so he could leave some space, On the other hand alonso tried a dangerous move putting Vettel in a difficult position, if alonso backed off a bit, nothing would have happened. After all he had the speed to pass him somewhere else...
I know the tiffosi fans will attack me, for what I'll say, but it's my opinion that ferrari is the favorite child of fia for a very long time, and in their ground I wasn't expecting anything different...
I will respect the rules if they will be constant and non biased... ( they have not gave penalties for much more serious incidents).
 ps Also Alonso did not finished 3rd but 4th. I know team orders are legal now... I know every team has done it at some point, but in ferrari's case it is their routine. :vomit:

The sentence in bold is a load of rubbish - Massa had a LOT more degredation than Alonso, who passed him under normal circumstances. Ok Ferrari told Massa to not fight Alonso and make it easy, but it is something they should be allowed to do - Perez was catching at 2 seconds a lap, so why should Ferrari let Massa hold up Alonso?

Plus, it isnt like Massa was glued to Alonso's gearbox for the rest of the race, Alonso was consistently 0.5 - 1 second a lap faster than Massa in clear air and had he not had the qualifying problem would have been a long way ahead of Massa.

Massa had Raikkonen and Schumacher right on his tail when the chequered flag fell.

Exactly - had Alonso remained behind Massa he'd have been 6th - the only sensible thing to do was to switch the cars.

Alonso would have passed massa easily. Massa had no telemetry either, maybe that contributed.

The stewards this year are stricter. And that's good cause its been getting out of hand with sone guys. When you see the way kimi, alonso, button and the other talented guys race you can tell the difference between who's post 2007.

Some really weak posts above by the usual crew.

For starters I didn't think the incident warranted a penalty. In the end it made no difference, so that's a good thing.

FiA favour Ferrari - your anti-Ferrari view of the world probably drives this feeling far more than anything based in reality. Trust me, there are many Tifosi who believe the reverse is true :)

Yep, Ferrari, as they always have, expect their drivers to act as "team-mates" and to work together for the common good of the team. Just like any other team sport. Clearly you don't like that and its your right to feel that way, but, I admire it. I guess Drogba would be your ideal soccer-to-F1 driver conversion.

Interesting that Fernando damaged his car off track in the incident with Vettel...

Pat Fry, Technical Director
“.... Then there was the incident when Fernando went off the track in his duel with Vettel: once the telemetry was working again, we spotted there was something not quite right at the rear, so in the final laps, we asked him to be cautious, avoiding the kerbs. When the car was in parc ferme, I have to say we could see the damage was quite bad, also affecting the aerodynamics."

Haha, now thats childish. Maybe I can do one better. If Vettel had not done the drive through penalty, he might have crashed in turn 1 as his break could have over heated due to the speed he would have come into the corner with. Maybe it did not happen later in the race, but it could be because his brakes cooled down due to the drive through penalty. We can never know that now, can we?

But seriously, who do you think are correct here? You with your sofa F1 experience, or Martin Brundle, Johnny Herbert, Anthony Davidson and the stewards (with their ex race car driver)? I think I just leave that one hanging....

As someone wrote, these stewards can’t be held accountable for what other stewards did or did not do in the past (unless, of course, they’re the same people).

I really hope Perez gets the recognition he deserves - be that a drive in a top tier team, or Sauber coming up with a car that matches his talent. I partly want it to be the latter, as I think Sauber deserve some praise - and I worry Perez would not be allowed to flourish as much as a No.2 driver....

Maybe Perez can replace Hamilton at McLaren when he goes to Mercedes/RedBull/Ferrari/HRT*

:hehe:
