Grosjean at fault without a doubt and no doubt will shudder when he watches the on-board cam of Alonso's car.

Button was always going to win this and not sure why Lewis didn't get the same wing as him but that is about right for McClaren. I think a coin was tossed rather than looking at the weather forecast for the race.

Good drive from Vettel and was the only man doing anything today.

He does do it. Grosjean moved right over the track to squeeze Hamilton. But Grosjean stops once and holds position with Hamilton. For a fraction of a second. Once Grosjean has his back wheel interlocked with Hamilton's front wheel, I don't think that Hamilton can move far enough left to disentangle and move in behind
Grosjean. Then Grosjean moves again to the right as Hamilton is going slower, and the wheels hit. I don't think Hamilton had anywhere to go once Grosjean was in the first position, and if Hamilton was moving, it appeared to be he was trying to fit in behind. But there was no way to do this. And in any case Grosjean moved right again, so even if Hamilton had avoided the wheels touching the cars would have touched anyway.

The crash at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix was one of the scariest seen in Formula 1 for some time. Triggered by Romain Grosjean, who is likely to receive a hefty penalty, no less than three cars were launched high into the air in front of a charging pack.


After Pastor Maldonado jumped the start, Grosjean squeezed Lewis Hamilton onto the grass. The now out-of-control McLaren duly tobogganed into the Lotus, taking out both Sergio Pérez – who clipped Maldonado – and championship leader Fernando Alonso. Kamui Kobayashi was also tagged, ruining Sauber’s superb second and fourth grid slots.

As the F1 paddock begins to leave Spa, everybody is breathing a sigh of relief after Grosjean’s car missed Alonso’s head by centimetres.

“A good start, then a big boom and then off - I haven’t seen the images but the main thing is that we are all okay,” Grosjean told reporters before being asked if he had moved over too soon. “I don’t know…as I say I haven’t seen the footage yet.”

The Frenchman’s rivals were less sympathetic.


“Yeah I’m okay,” Pérez told BBC Sport. “I think we paid for the mistakes of other drivers. It’s a shame for myself and for the team and we’re looking forward to the next one.”

The crash marked a highly disappointing end for Hamilton, who refused to speak to the media until after the race and who had arrived in Belgium as the most recent F1 winner.

“I don’t really want to talk about the start,” Hamilton said bluntly. “I think people can see what happened, but huge congratulations to Jenson (Button) on a fantastic race which was like a walk in the park for him. It’s great to see that the team has great pace.”

FIA stewards are not likely to take kindly to Grosjean, whose start-line tactics have already been questioned this season – not least in Monaco when he moved over on Michael Schumacher and consequently spun across the chasing field. Today’s collision is also likely to rekindle the debate over closed cockpit racing in the sport.

Has there been any official confirmation of maldonado jumping the start? The guys on speed did a slow-mo high def replay that looked quite legal. Any vids or articles you can link showing otherwise would be much appreciated. Last I heard was that it was going to be reviewed by stewards after the race.

Hamilton himself was even more reluctant to comment on the accident.

"It wasn't great, I've got a bit of a bruise on my leg. I was more worried about Fernando," Lewis told Sky F1's Natalie Pinkham.

Well yeah because 15-20 years ago drivers like him would of been banned never mind dropped by his team. He clearly must be bringing in billions to the sport and If someone dies because of him I wonder if they will still think its worth it.

Well yeah because 15-20 years ago drivers like him would of been banned never mind dropped by his team. He clearly must be bringing in billions to the sport and If someone dies because of him I wonder if they will still think its worth it.

He nearly did kill a marshal. And got a (5?) race ban for it.
