I'm getting a tablet when I get back to the UK but don't know which one. I get conflicting reports from friends. Some swear by apple others say get android, It tends to be the more IT oriented people that say android, which is worrying, cos Im not!. The comparisons online all seem to place the Ipad top. If it is Ipad it wont bre the most recent because its too expensive, it'll be an older model. Anyway advice and suggestions would be appreciated. Here's what I want it for..

It needs to be easy to use, intuitive.
Ive decided to not upgrade my phone, just keep what Ive got for calls and texts and use a tablet for everything else. So...suggestions.

Oh! and can you put USB sticks into tablets? How do you get photographs onto them? HELP!!

For you? I'd say an iPad... go for an iPad 2 with just WiFi and you can save quite a bit. When you do the iPad you'll need iTunes on a desktop computer so if you're against iTunes for some reason then that may be a showstopper. But know that an Android tabled will also require some form of PC software to synch and load/swap things between your computer and your tablet.

Price is an issue and you're paying a premium for the iPad, but as far at tablets go, the way you load software, the way you work with the tablet (only ONE button) and the way you set it up is all exponentially simpler on the iPad than on a Tablet. Just about every Android device you come in contact with will have slightly different OS and it's all heavily customized by the vendors so you wind up with something very fragmented whereas help if you've got an iPad is much easier to get.

If you've already got an iPod, then the iPad is the only way to go as you'll be able to sync all of your music, videos and pictures as well as easily share files between all of your devices with iCloud and wirelessly sync them all.

With a tabled you're going to be browsing the web and playing the odd game but you're not really going to be doing more than that. So it's okay to buy a cheap tablet or even something that's heavily subsidized like the Kindle or Nook that you can buy for $100 dollars or so and do those things for 1/4 of the price of an iPad.

I'm an Android and I am a self confessed geek... so there you go! But recently I bought an iPad for my son to help with his special needs educational requirements, and I actually quite like it, very slick interface which is easy to use. The question also comes down to cost; Android tablets are cheaper and you'll have a larger choice of tablets from less than £100 to £500, with Apple, you'll pay a minimum of £400 and upto £800 if you go for "The New iPad", that's really what Apple have called it! To be honest, even as a newbie to tablets, Android is simple to use, if you can use Windows, you'll be fine with either type of tablet! What I would say is get a 10in tablet, which ever way you go, it makes life a lot easier for typing and using webpages.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm inclined to agree that I-pad is probably the way to go for me. I-pad 2's are about £300 which is comparable to some of the androids. Ive got a friend coming out to stay for a few days next week (techie/engineer) so i'll be getting android pressure then He has already suggested I try some out in shops which might be a good idea. Ive used and Ipad and I do like it. I agree Myown about not getting one too small, that's why I don't want to go the way of the I-phone. The nexus has a good write up but is small, good if you want an e reader but Ive already got a kindle so dont need it for that.
I'll let you know what decision I eventually come to. They're not cheap so i want to get it right. (I think I really want the Ipad, its trusting that decision when people better at this stuff say get android)

Just go into your local electronics store and play with both iPad and a comparably priced Android device, buy the one that feels best suited to your needs... people will always have opinions one way or another, all that counts is what feels right to you, don't buy something purely on the recommendation of someone else; their needs may be different to yours.

Always good advice, but not always. There are times when people do know better. Someone out there did buy a Sony Betamax, and that person may have even bought an HD DVD player five years ago. The point is that buying what feels good although sound advice, can wind up having you buying an HP tablet, or a RIM tablet and in a frenetic paced environment it's easy to get left behind and be stuck with a product that you'll get zero support on this time next year.

Since you already have Kindle, I'd seriously look at the Amazon Kindle Fire if they're available to you, it will be super cheap because of the subsidy and you'll be able to easily move all of your existing books to it. You'll just have to be comfortable with the relatively smallish screen.

I wouldn't recommend a Blackberry Playbook for example and I wouldn't recommend a Kindle Fire either, the Kindle overlay OS is too restrictive, too much of the Android OS is hidden from view.

I know but when my wife wants a tablet it's hard to over look it for 99 bucks, when all she'll do is browse the web and play angry birds. So far she's still using a four year old netbook!

The Kindle Fire is being sold for $99 now? Bought one for my mother in law last Christmas for $199 and she loves it but she only uses it for reading ebooks and occasionally looking something up online.

Oh, one thing to remember is that the iPad does not support Flash, meaning that 1 in 6 websites won't work properly as they are either 100% flash or have flash elements.

My tablet saga continues
This morning I was definitely thinking ipad was the way to go for . And then I hear about kindle fire ( I browse the web and play angry birds WB! )
Anyway, why did I think it might be good after saying I didn't want a little screen and already have a kindle for reading? Well, I love my kindle, its easy to work, have an account with Amazon and its easy to download books. Also I really like Amazon, great customer service, cheap,easy website, easy ordering, quick&free delivery etc etc (recent dispute with them very satisfactorily resolved. I don't like apple.So I read a bit more about the kindle. First review was raving,it said even 3year olds could use it( sounding good!!!)But then I realised it was not entirely an objective review....a little partisan. I read some more and it said kindle fire doesnt support facebook or twitter???? Does that mean they wont workon it? Cos that's no good. It hasn't got a USB stick hole(which Im told I need) but neither has the ipad. Its back lit-which is great for reading in bed but no good for reading in the sun, my kindle works in the sun, so if it doesnt work like the kindle it wont be any good for sunbathe reading, so Id still have to take both on holiday which makes one reason for choosing it no good. I continued to investigate and it started going on about honeycomb icecream and gingerbread sandwiches!! I cant remember if the kindle has these..or the ipad ?and i have no idea what they do or if they're good things Maybe they make the tablet smell yummy
Well Im back to not knowing what to do again.
Oh and there's another one that comes out well in the ratings, name something like 'arse', not a good name! But I think that's out because its as expensive as the ipad (if i get ipad2)

EDIT. About Flash. Is that important? What wont work without it?

The Kindle Fire has Android 2.3.3 installed I believe, which is Gingerbread, there are Facebook and Twitter apps from what I understand, but they are limited Amazon versions. It also doesn't have expandable memory, no microSD slot, which means that you will be stuck on 8GB storage. The iPad has the same issue, no microSD slot, so whatever model you get, you're stuck with that storage capacity but in reality, you'll probably not use all the storage anyway, unless you load a lot of music and movies on your device.

As for Flash support; about one in six websites will not function as intended, and some websites, the website for the new Resident Evil movie is a good example, it's 100% Flash so doesn't work at all. Also many embedded Flash videos, such as Youtube and Vimeo will also not work.

The best version of Android is 4.1 Jellybean, V4 is Ice Cream Sandwich, and V3 is Honeycomb.

Another slight issue wirh the Kindle Fire.......

It's not actually sold in the UK Market yet. US only still. There are rumours of an Autumn release here in UK but Amazon have not given a release date yet........

Not sure about apple, but I use the Kindle app on my android and it is very good and you can change a few things on it so that you can read it much better.

Ok Thanks. So still a few questions over that kindle fire. It has to be released in the UK, iv'e read mixed reports about ones that have been imported, some say it works fine, others say not. Ive also heard they're developing a bigger screen, one to further rival apple, but that will probably take a long while to filter through to uk. It needs to have facebook twitter and youtube really. Further investigation in shops methinks. Thanks again for all the help.
