For a country deep in recession it is about money!

What about the young generation being inspired to get into sport? diverting them away from a life of obesity?

Surely this is the job of the parents?!

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have parents with the wherewithall (money, know-how, time, commitment, desire)to provide those opportunities. These kids have new role models now.

So society plays no role in the formation of a generation? According to that logic the Nazi youth then was due to baaaaad parenting.

Of course society plays a part but parents have a responsibility to inspire their kids and not feed them on crap.

Unless the parents themselves are Olympics athletes , surely inspiring their kinds to take up sport needs at least some external influence?

I don't think so. There are plenty of successful sports persons whose parents have been keen amatuers.

We're not off topic when we're discussing the the social economic value of the Olympics and you profess there is only one opinion and that's yours.

The amusing part is that YOU contradict yourself most!

Yet when someone calls out one of your generalized off the cuff comments and cites an example or valid fact... or more often quotes what you yourself said yesterday or in a neighboring thread that contradicts what you say today.... you get all sentimental and butthurt. Look I can rolley eye too.

But you know what? I'm not even going to waste my time with you if you're not going to bother to fully read what I write.

Granted, but I'm fed up with the somebody else will do it attitude in the UK.

It's not a good attitude I grant you; and as a teacher I bear the brunt of that attitude quite a lot. It's incredibly difficult to change the life and outcomes of children who come from families who don't care. It's even more heartbreaking when you see talent in these children. But this is not the fault of the children, they deserve every chance. And the children from parents who want to help but don't know how? maybe those parents will now also be inspired, some of them are barely more than children themselves.

There are a few teachers in my family (mainly secondary school level) and I've heard the same thing quite a few times. The sadest thing is that some of the nicest kids they've had come from families who are either a bit lost or don't seem to care too much (though I like to think they do care in their own way).

Was dull to start off with, but ended on a massive high. Sir Ian McKellen's dad dancing is tremendous. I wonder which fat-headed Tory is going to describe this one as being even more leftie than the first?
