Yes you can argue Jenson made up more places Lewis, but what cars was each driver respectively battling with?Several of the cars jenson 'overtook' were out due to incidents, cant remember them all but Maldonado, Perez and Di Resta spring to mind.

I'll give you di Resta but Lewis also benefited from Maldonado and Perez' woes, if they didn't collide; they would both have finished ahead of Lewis, so would would have moved back two places and yes, Jenson would have failed to score; but moving up four places is still better than going backwards two places. Are McLaren's woes because of putting their eggs in the Jenson basket, have they put eggs in anyone's basket? It seems to me that McLaren are plain and simply falling behind while everyone else is accelerating in the development race!

You're joking. You've hinted more than once in this thread that Jenson did 'more' with the McLaren than Lewis did....

Okay, look everyone knows when you're coming from the back, its like climbing a hill. The higher you go, the steeper it gets. The Mclaren was just a top 10 car on raceday, and Lewis was going to climb no further anyway since THAT was the pace of the car.

What if Jenson started last, and Lewis started around 15? And Lewis ended up 12 and Jenson ended up 14th (passing the three new teams and Toro Rossos)? Is that a job 'better done' than Lewis? Come on myown, you know it yourself and the fact remains, Lewis did what he could with the car and Jenson did as well. I'd give it to Jenson for finishing less than 10 seconds behind Lewis, he might have found his form. Or maybe McLaren have solved his woes and managed to f*ck up the car in relation to the competition in the process, which is also likely.

You make a good point, Hammer and I should really know better; I guess I get so p*ssed off with people constantly bitching about Jenson and putting him down even when he puts in a decent performance, it really starts to get under my skin; I can accept it when Jenson hasn't driven well but bitching just because he is Jenson Button makes me not want to come on a contribute to the forum. But the sliding scale of difficulty in overtaking is not as wide as it once was; pretty much everyone down to 16th or 17th have a good turn of speed which makes overtaking much harder, I'm not saying that passing Ricciardo is as hard as passing Vettel but overtaking midfield teams has become tougher in general as they are much more competitive!

I agree, a driver doing his best should be respected. These after all are the best drivers in the world, so whether Jenson's 3rd best or 13th best he should still be respected for his driving.
HOWEVER he is not 'doing his best to back Hamilton'. Should he ? No...not yet, not at the expense to his own racing; but when they're not racing each other on track one would not expect him to go out of his way to create difficulty for his team mate (Silverstone)
If McLaren want to go all out for the drivers championship, and that means beating Alonso, then at some point they will have to ask their second placed driver, to help their first placed driver . I don't think the time is right to do that yet. I dont think Whitmarsh will ask for that anyway. I think if Lewis was out of the championship totally he'd help his team mate..he's said/done as much on previous occassions. If Jenson was out of the championship totally I dont think he'd help his team mate..he's said/done as much on previous ocassions. This is where I have a problem matching Jenson's smiley matey face with his actions. It's why I'm probably harder than I should be on Jenson.

Jenson Button not ready to help Hamilton


Jenson Button insists he is not ready to fall in line behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton’s championship bid.

In Hungary, Felipe Massa – who is pushing to stay at Ferrari next year – vowed to help his teammate Fernando Alonso seal the drivers’ crown in 2012. In fairness to Button, however, the situation at McLaren at the mid-point of the 2012 season is quite different.

While Alonso is leading the championship and is a massive 139 points ahead of Massa, Button has been a race winner in 2012 and is only 41 points behind Hamilton. So Briton Button answered ‘no’ when asked if he will move over for Hamilton if he sees the sister McLaren in his mirrors.

“If I am leading a race, then I want to win that race,” he is quoted by British newspapers. “I will not be asked to do anything but if there comes a time in this championship when I can’t win, then I will obviously help my teammate,” added Button

The rest of it is fair enough I think. Mathematically he's still in the WDC but no worries, he'll be out of it soon enough.

That seems like a lot but it's -25 after each race. The gap is almost a 100 between Button and Alonso (that's 4 wins for Button and 4 DNFs for Alonso to get Button back in the mix), he's out of it but I guess ego dies last in F1. Unless your name is Massa, who is desperate for a job in 2013. Asking for 2 DNFs from Alonso (who hasn't DNF'ed so far) and 2 wins from Hamilton in the same races is already pushing it.
