Does anyone have any knowledge on how fast an f1 car can do 100m from a standing start, if a human can do it in 9.8 seconds it has to be pretty close as a human can accelerate to top speed almost instantly.

It would also make great viewing.

It won't be anywhere close. An F1 car accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in what? 3 seconds max. At that speed it covers about 28 meters per second. Let's say, for the first 2 seconds it goes at an average speed of 50 km/h, which is still 14 meters per second (thus 28 meters total in the first 2 seconds). During the third second it'll cover close to 20 meters (average of 75 km/h or so). Thus, after 3 seconds the F1 car is already at the half-way point of 50 meters. After that, it still accelerates even more (unlike a human) and will cover the second 50 meters in maybe 1.5 seconds at an average speed of 150 km/h (>40 meters per second). Bottom line: my educated guess would be half the time of Usain Bolt.

I don't even think it would take an F1 car, probably anything that does 0-60 in under 6 seconds would do it but I'm too lazy to even attempt the math.

I would say that in the 9.6 seconds of a very fast 100m runner's time, an F1 car could get up to at least 260kph, and that is a conservative estimate.

Average acceleration on that is therefore 7.2 m/s^2.

Quick calculation says that based on that very conservative estimate, in 100m an F1 car would reach 137kph, and based on that it would take 5.2s.

But really an F1 car can most likely go 0-160kph then brake back to 0 within 5.2s!

F1 car 0-160kph takes about 4 seconds i think, which is acceleration of 11.1m/s^2. Based on that you're looking at a 100m time of about 4.25 seconds. And based on that again, the F1 car could do 400m in 8.5 seconds!

As a point of reference, see Nico's start on the video below, he reaches an indicated 250kph in some 8-9 seconds off the line:

When I said F1 car I clearly meant a Morris Minor.

When you said Blake or Bolt we assumed you were talking about Harry Blake and Tom Bolt, at an inpatient weight loss clinic for morbid obesity, they do the 100m in about 47 and 53 seconds respectively.

I sometimes swear F1 teams read this forum:

Despite being marginally slower out of the blocks however, the E20 will complete the same distance in the blink of an eye ; just 4.25s to be precise

Woo! I got it right! :hehe:
