I'll admit I've not yet seen this incident but the sensibe and consistent thing to do is hand the position back to Button. A time penalty of 20 or 30 seconds is OTT.

I don't see how a time penalty would be OTT; it would have yielded a drive-through for passing off the track; which would have lost him more that 20 seconds.

The normal on-track procedure is to hand an ill-gotten place back. This rule should be applied rather than a draconian time penalty.

Yes, that would be the "gentlemans" way of doing it, but Vettel didn't yield the place to Jenson; Button got penalised for making an overtake off the track on Massa and didn't yield the place and duly served a drive-through penalty, so why shouldn't Vettel serve the equivalent of a drive-through penalty? Anyway, this is being discussed in the German GP thread, let's continue this in there!
