From autosport:

Sebastian Vettel has been handed a penalty for his overtaking move on Jenson Button in the German Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver passed his McLaren rival for second with less than two laps to go by running off track at the exit of the hairpin.

Vettel's move was illegal, according to the stewards, who imposed a post-race drive-through penalty on the German, meaning 20 seconds have been added to his finishing time.

The German drops from second to fifth, promoting Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen to third.

More to follow.

It's a fair penalty I think, he clearly gained an advantage from going off the circuit. The other incidents were different, the driver prevented a crash from going off the circuit, but they didn't gain a clear advantage versus staying on track.

Not a great race though, but some great midfield action mainly due to the Force India's over qualifying.

Hopefully this will stop others from taking the piss in the same way in the future, it has gotten beyond ridiculous and now, thankfully, is being dealt with.

20 SECOND PENALTY FOR SEB

Said who ?! There's no official announcement regarding this on the F1 official site (formula1.com); care to elaborate?

It's official, came up as breaking news on a few official sites already. 5th place for Seb Bieber.

Funny stuff as formula1.com is the only official site regarding F1 :) and yet there's no news regarding "Vettel's penalty" :)
I guess we have to be circumspect regarding "rumours" and wait for official statements :)

:censored: joke! Draconian penalty.

Hopefully EwanM is wrong in what he's told you.

Don't agree at all that it's draconian. He will have known full well that he completed the overtake off track. He was clearly faster as he finished a good bit ahead of Button. He could (and should) have given the place back immediately, and still likely would have been able to make a fair pass on either the same or next lap, then taken the second place fairly with no controversy. As such, a drive through is a fair and indeed completely apt punishment.

This is what I wrote in the Pool thread in response to Andrew, it was a premeditated move, Vettel was completely aware of what he was doing!
