Yeah exactly, best at collecting points, not best at driving.
Best at dreaming up the tire strategy for the strategist like Brawn or Whitmarsh, practising pit stops for the crew, dreaming up ways to exploit the regs and applying it to the car design for the designer, arguing for it to be banned for the engineer who didn't think of it, fighting against penalties in a courtroom for the team lawyer, moving over for the teammate, it goes on and on. It's a team sport for sure. Much ado just for some points.

Part of being the best driver is knowing what makes the car best and making the car 'your bitch' so you can be the best driver you can be. Otherwise it is just a case of lucking into the formula of that moment matching your driving style best. Then Alonso would by default be the best if the formula stipulated a twitchy rear-end, while plenty of drivers would pass him left and right if the formula stipulated a solid rear-end, and that's just one scenario.
