I've been doing quite a lot of reading recently, as I like to do. :)

A short while ago, I finished reading George Orwell's The Road to Wigan Pier, which is a book of two parts. Firstly, it describes the horrific living and working conditions of the working classes in Lancashire and Yorkshire in the 1930s, which is of particular interest to me, in light of my background. Orwell then goes on to discuss Socialism, and his views on why it doesn't seem to work. Some very good points are raised, which are still relevant today, as Socialism still continues to confuse and alienate people, who aren't very politically inclined. Orwell gets very deep here, in similar fashion to the political rant in Nineteen Eighty Four, so it's definitely a book I'll read again when I get a chance.

Moving back to fiction, I then read a brilliant book by Andrew Pepper, called The Last Days of Newgate. Tremendous stuff, and also of particular interest to me. I'm a big fan of London, having lived there for a while now, and I take a particular interest in Victorian London, so this is right up my street. It's about a Bow Street Runner, who embarks on a dangerous and difficult quest to solve a series of brutal murders, taking him all around the filth and stench of London's streets and also to Ireland, when he becomes the most wanted man in the country.

Having finished that, I'm now reading David Coulthard's autobiography It Is What It Is. It's proving to be a brilliant read, and I'm getting through it at quite a rate. Anyone else read this? If not, it's highly recommended.

Ive read lots of motor sport biographies/autobiographies-Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna, James Hunt, Lewis hamilton(lots of them :D ),Tommy Byrne, Damon Hill(lots of them), Eddie Irvine, Prof Syd Watkins, Enzo Ferrari. Ive got a big Moss one but not read it yet. Of them I particularly enjoyed the Stewart and Byrne ones. I tend to choose excellent drivers or querky characters. Coulthard's never been a favourite of mine but maybe on your reommendation I'll try the book.
Last days of Newgate sounds good too, might give that a whirl.

how did you get on with 50 shades of grey?

I am reading "In Her Name: Redemption" by Michael R. Hicks

http://www.amazon.co.uk/In-Her-Name-Red ... B001A7X0BI

You can get the 1st book free on Amazon

Fifty shades of grey is ok and i will finish it. I took it to Silverstone but didnt do any reading there(that usually happens). If the book was completely gripping id have finished it by now. I've kind of guessed where its going. The main character is annoying, "oh my!", or "oh wow" about three times a page ; and ive not found it a particular turn on. Still its good enough to want to get to the end. I'll see then whether to download the next two.

Im away all summer so should get lots of reading done then. I'll download that free one. Ive read so many free books since ive had my kindle, its brill!!

I'm currently reading The Liar, which is a fantastic novel by Stephen Fry. I've read half of it, and so far it's about public school boys who are desperate to frolic with each other. So delightfully gay, I'm loving it :cloud9::cloud9::cloud9::cloud9::cloud9:

Stephen Fry is god.

Stephen Fry - the pseudo intellectual. I find it ironic that he advertises Richard branstons latest ploy to expand his wealth.

Just adding to this little tale of my love affair with Fry's first novel, I thought I'd give you an insight into public boys school life, as observed by this book:

Golly, how magnificent! Did anyone practice this back in their school days? :D

If I ever did I'd have got me head kicked in not that I'm into that sort of capers! Sounds a bit fruity with no lassies involved.

I'm working my way through a series of books by Alistair MacLean. So far I've read HMS Ulysses, The Guns of Navarone, South by Java Head, The Last Frontier, Night Without End, Fear is the Key and Ice Station Zebra. I'm currently a good way through When Eight Bells Toll.
