So, here we are after eight rounds of season 2012 and within each team, there is an interesting dynamic taking shape...qualifying duels between team-mates. As of Valencia:

Red Bull
Vettel - 4
Webber - 4

McLaren
Hamilton - 8
Button - 0

Ferrari
Alonso - 8
Massa - 0

Mercedes
Rosberg - 5
Schumi - 3

Lotus
Grosjean - 6
Raikkonen - 2

Force India
di Resta - 5
Hulkenberg - 3

Sauber
Kobayashi - 5
Perez - 3

Toro Rosso
Ricciardo - 7
Vergne - 1

Williams
Maldonado - 6
Senna - 2

Caterham
Kovalainen - 7
Petrov - 1

Marussia
Glock - 5
Pic - 3

HRT
de la Rosa - 8
Karthikeyan - 0

Some of the results are not shocking (Lewis/Button, Alonso/Massa and Rosberg/Schumi) but I find the Grosjean/Raikkonen and Kovalainen/Petrov duel interesting. Yes, Kimmi has been away for two years but he returned with not much edge lost in the pre-season and he was a brilliant qualifier before he left for rallying pastures. I expected this dual to be closer...maybe even. For Petrov, he was a useful pair of hands when he was with Renault, a better car than the Caterham. I expected him to give Kovi a much harder time but honestly, so far, he hasn't put up much of a fight. Interesting!

Much can be said about what this particular stat means but in my view, the impact as it relates to a team's focus on car development, the psychological advantage one driver gains over the other, how/if this impacts point tallies and wins is huge. You may find other areas of impact. I'm also enjoying watching "qualifying strategies" and how they play out as a result of the Pirelli performance mandate. What say you?

Personally, I'm impressed with Webber and Kobayashi.

Webber, because we know who his teammate is - a fantastic qualifier, probably the best in the field on a Saturday.

Kobayashi, because he just sucked in qualifying last year and I thought it would be his Achilles heel this year with a very quick teammate beside him, but he's held his own which I'm glad to see.

With the above stat, and the fact Webber is second in the WDC standings, I think we can safely say Vettel clearly isn't all that without the RBD....?

Ignoring Valencia of course

Good point Hammer. Webber has quietly gone about the business of matching Vettel in most areas. In race form, he just needs some luck and equally good strategies. He may not win more races but be in a position to compete more at the front. I still struggle to read Kobi...seems somewhat hot and cold to me. At each race, I never seem to know which Kobi we're gonna get on Saturday and Sunday.

I think kovi is a lot better driver than people give him credit for, he was only 3-4tenths off lewis at mclaren, better than No Grip to be honest :P

I watched Kovi beat Schumi at ROC in Paris. Was very impressed and pleased when he joined McLaren. I like him a lot. I liked the pairing of Kovi and Lewis. Im not sure he got the level of support Button is getting though.

Yup wished theyd kept faith and kept given him another year tbh

Kovalainen was never equal in McLaren with Hamilton like Button is; Kovalainen was clear #2 despite what McLaren will claim! just like DC was clear #2 to Hakkinen/Raikkonen!

Funny really, their is a site that is actually giving Jenson the 1 point but i don't agree with it.

It's 8-0 IMO http://www1.skysports.com/formula-1/new ... ad-to-head

I think it shows that Force India and Sauber are benefiting from running two competitive and solid drivers,

6 Sauber-Ferrari 60
7 Williams-Renault 45
8 Force India-Mercedes 44

The Williams has been quite a bit faster, but Maldonaldo has thrown quite a few points away and Senna's been slow recently.

Lotus would do well if they can sort out their reliability and strategy, I think Kimi needs some more time to get back up to speed, Schumacher took long enough.

Good observation but this can't be held against McLaren and Ferrari since both Lewis and Alonso are destroying their highly rated team-mates. Kovi is clearly falling into that unique club. :)

Kovalainen showing Petrov how it's done in the same way he did with the former qualifying king that was Jarno Trulli! Time to give him another chance in a top car?
#310051
Even at McLaren Hekki was a pretty fast qualifier I think, maybe he is a later developing driver, but I don't rate Petrov too highly, he never completely outperformed his team mates, and they weren't highly regarded, Heidfield isn't in F1 any longer and Senna's struggling at Williams.

I still remember Petrov's first big result, in the yellow Renault at Budapest back in '10. Bloody strong drive that one. Not consistently reproduced, though.
