I don't see why I should work my bottom off (probably until the day I die the way pensions are going) just to make ends meet when some celebrity can flout the system and get away with it and live the life of Riley.

^^ see my Romney and his wife's horse example above.

But there is no earthly reason why he should avoid paying what he should be paying. The fact he, and others, are benefitting from a totally moronic law which is a farce. I don't see why I should work my bottom off (probably until the day I die the way pensions are going) just to make ends meet when some celebrity can flout the system and get away with it and live the life of Riley. It is properly screwed up.

So because you can't, no one else should be allowed to?

Because the accountant's bill would be higher than the tax bill. :hehe: What's funny is that I've got no clue who Jimmy Carr is.

that is the point I was trying to make.

Jimmy Carr is a very droll comedian that is quite sarcastic.

Tax laws have always been a source of debate and discussion. This loophole will probably get closed sooner or later but there will be another loophole somewhere else that will be exploited then when it's closed there will be another one etc etc. Either way, us lower earners will still be hacked off and the higher earners will still be employing accountants to find the next loophole. Just the way it goes sadly.

The lefty in me is coming out in this thread. :hehe:

So because you can't, no one else should be allowed to?

Not at all but he should pay his fair share like most of us do. Tax laws are a burden but they are what they are.

What's funny is that I've got no clue who Jimmy Carr is.

He's a comedian who goes in for the more dead pan droll style one liners. I don't find him the funniest of guys but he must get a few laughs to make £3.2M!

I much prefer the likes of Lee Evans and Ross Noble.

Yeah, I guess if they're really funny then they make it stateside and then make 32 million instead of 3.2 so the tax evasion potential would just be even greater. :hehe:

Dude is using a loophole to his advantage, you can't really reasonably fault someone for doing something completely within the law to help themselves out. He's not the first rich person to do this to pay less tax either (i worked at HMRC once upon a time, briefly, and have seen the odd celeb's tax returns).

We would all do it in the same situation, and anyway i bet most of us have taken advantage of any loophole presented to us in daily life, somewhere along the line in some form...

Speak for yourself on the we would all do it if in the same situation... there's a difference in taking advantage of double coupon day at the market versus tax avoidance through a loophole that isn't offered to anyone but the rich that can afford it.

Anyway, he buckled, and I guess to him the price of a soiled image is not as enticing as simply paying the taxes. We all make our own choices.

I have absolutely no issue with someone making all the money they can manage to make, Making money though is different than avoiding taxes on said money, legal, gray or illegal as it may be, it's still avoiding paying taxes and providing back into the social structure.

There are lots and lots of billionaires in the world, we don't have the ability to process what that means, it's just a number until you put it into perspective of what a billion dollars actually buys you. You couldn't possibly spend it, your children couldn't possibly spend it, so obviously avoiding paying taxes in any way you can makes sense if that's what you're into, but it isn't for any reason other than greed and there's no rationalization around that.

Five ways to spend a billion dollars
