All these F1 guys are top racers and drivers, thats clear

Each and everyone is capable of driving fantastically, given the car and conditions and if they are in the zone that race or not. The great drivers though always drive as best as they can, rain or shine, they can do things others cant, namely driving at the limit almost al the time.

Other drivers like Webber, Button, (maybe this new Kimi), Massa have too many off days, they are inconsistent, they only shine within a narrow band of circumstance

As long as the competition plays out on track alls god

Its when a driver appears to be helped and elevated and is an instigator of dirty tricks etc etc, gloats when his teammate is down, proclaims himself up there with the best, then that driver has opened the door to forensic examination of his abilities, record and current form.

If said driver has had a career of inconsistency punctuated with the occasional flashes of brilliance then he is likely to have a natural place in the order, if he then has 4 races in a row that are historically truer to his traditional place in the order he must either accept it, knuckle down to improve or step up to the plate and start to do what great drivers do, make this happen

I really do not believe there is anything wrong with his car, its good enough to take him to 10th on this years grid, he can then try improve from there

what he seems to be doing is gamble heavily on setup and updates, going for all or nothing, so far he comes up with nothing and then moans that his car is really bad, its not bad, he made it bad trying to move up the grid ahead of drivers who are faster than he is

Anyway I am sure we were all pleasantly surprised by Jensons 'improvement' last year and thought he had really changed and learnt to do his best all the time. Lets see how he does next race, but I cant see him qualifying high up the grid or making up places during the race, so how many more dire drives before we accept that he is just not better than half the drivers on todays grid?

I don't think whitmarsh regrets or should regret anything he's said. It was said while he was on a high from winning the season opener and they just had a fantastic winter. Way way way better than the winter the had before 2011. If one believes he should regret saying it, then one must also be inclined to regret lauding button and mclaren as the upcoming 2012 WDC/WCC that same weekend on this forum, and likely will regret making four brand new threads the day of lewis' win in canada if lewis and mclaren keep falling short for the rest of the season.

They say you're only as good as your last race. This is because memories are quite short in F1. One week button is a hero, the next he's a zero.

McLaren hopeful it has identified cause of Button's struggles

McLaren's operations director Simon Roberts is hopeful that the team has discovered some "very subtle" differences between its cars that could help solve Jenson Button's recent problems.

Button has only scored two points in the last four grands prix and has failed to make it in to the final part of qualifying in the last three. Button's struggles were accentuated when he finished 16th in Canada while Lewis Hamilton won the race, but Roberts told a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in that the team had discovered some potential causes ahead of the European Grand Prix.

"I think Canada was very interesting because fundamentally we run the same car for both drivers and they both have the same parts available," Roberts said. "Although we allow them to adapt the set-up to their driving style, clearly we had something fundamentally different in terms of the tyre performance and car performance. We've been able to actually capitalise on that and there's been a huge amount of work back at the factory analysing the data and just checking that everything was as we thought it was.

"We're pretty sure at the moment that there was nothing untoward with Jenson's car and actually nothing fundamentally wrong with the set-up, but in the subtlety of these cars at the moment there are differences, and I think going in to Valencia we're quite optimistic that - having identified that - I think we can have a slightly different way of getting Jenson's car under him for qualifying and for the race."

When asked what the differences are, Roberts refused to go in to detail, but stressed it was so small that the team was cautious how much progress it would make with Button in Valencia.

"I'm not going to go in to exactly what they were but they are very very subtle. This isn't big stuff like fundamentally running a different aero balance or anything like that, this is absolutely down buried in the detail and I think you've seen already this year how teams can get right in the sweet spot of the tyres or miss it. I don't think we were far off (in Canada), there was nothing fundamentally wrong with his set-up but on the day it clearly delivered a different level of performance. So we think we're a step nearer to understanding it all, but whether we've got it cracked yet only time will tell. Definitely a painful but interesting learning exercise for us."

The'yre saying the cars are the same, they set them up differently to suit their own style of driving and there's nothing wrong with Jenson's set up. But very very very subtle differences are apparent. So where? What do they mean? It was gobbledegook.

I think his next excuse will be that he used Lewis' setup but it was just not for him and so next time they will try something else

Button needs to swallow his pride about qualifing 10th or so and just crack on with trying to gain places and points in the race

All he is doing is trying to pretend there is something wrong causing his low quali

there isnt, its just that the field have cars that are close and half of them are faster qualifiers than Jenson, I mean even in the second half of 2009, Reubens qualified front row and Button? 8th or so, his excuse?

Thats just the way the cookie crumbles. You cant stop people having and expressing their views so long as they do so civilly. Its a debate forum after all. A lot of people delight in bashing Hamilton. Alonso and Schumacher have had a fair share too. And even Vettel during his most excessive finger use and excursions into salad vegetables.
