McLaren has an opportunity to win the WCC, they're handily blowing that opportunity currently because of their performance in the pit and the inability of Jenson to score points. If they slip to third in the WCC this year because of that, I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion about in in the off season as that will cost the team lots of dollars.

Whatever happened to Jenson began after China as he's scored only 2 WCC points in the last 4 GPs. Coming to think of it, he's only scored points in 3 of the 7 GPs so far. The nose issues were not a factor until Spain? Or was the new nose introduced in Monaco? Certainly the floor has only been a factor since Canada so I think there are other things going on besides those two known factors.

If you recall China as well, the 2nd place flatters his pace. He was actually way slower in race pace than Lewis, remember Lewis was baulked back twice after his pitstops by traffic and was some 15 seconds behind Button but ended up finishing right behind him at the chequered flag. Granted, Button had the pit delay but it wasn't more than 5 seconds or so was it.

What gets me is that he was untouchable in Melbourne. And then, he drops off a cliff. It's a bit of a mystery...much as I know he's not the fastest driver out there, he's certainly not useless. I reckon we'd see him back on the pace in Valencia though...his China pace. Maybe qualify 7th or 8th and finish around the same.

And we have the good old British media sticking in the boot as well.

Goodness me, I'm not sure Martin will be crying into his pillow with regret, Jenson has had a few poor races that's all. It's not as if he's been like this since Melbourne!

Will Jenson win another race before the season is out? Most likely, yes.

I don't think whitmarsh regrets or should regret anything he's said. It was said while he was on a high from winning the season opener and they just had a fantastic winter. Way way way better than the winter the had before 2011. If one believes he should regret saying it, then one must also be inclined to regret lauding button and mclaren as the upcoming 2012 WDC/WCC that same weekend on this forum, and likely will regret making four brand new threads the day of lewis' win in canada if lewis and mclaren keep falling short for the rest of the season.

They say you're only as good as your last race. This is because memories are quite short in F1. One week button is a hero, the next he's a zero.

I think some McLaren fans are unable to take Button( or Whitmarsh by extension) seriously. All his career he was inconsistent slow useless and nowhere near a McLaren driver fit to follow the footsteps of most previous holders of the seat. He has a lucky lucky WC in a Brawn that had an advantage and he gets parachuted into the team. Everything is shuffled to accommodate this lame driver of specific needs, to the point of causing problems for the teams other 'real' Mclaren type driver.
All that is forgivable, whats not is when the lame duck starts to crow about being number 1, pulls dirty tricks to try rob a win from the other (save fuel debacle), promotes himself as the new face of a noble old team, a lame lazy useless playboy who is more interested in behaving like a race ace than actually working hard to become one

Button Whitmarsh and Michael are turning the team into a laughing stock, if there is no massive improvement (top 4 result) for Button in Valencia, what excuses can the trio turn to?

The engineers are crap?
The car is really bad, its just Lewis is really good?
The tyres are specially bad for Button?

Button ofcourse will explain his slowness and lack of bravery in the race as he has done throughout his entire career....I had no grip or balance and cant understand why

No Jenson you are not brave enough to push a car to the limit and unless your car is much better than another you are unable to prevail

This thread is bloody ridiculous. FFS, we are talking about a guy who collected title after title in karting (British Cadet Kart Champion & European Super A Kart Champion). He then replicated this form in the junior categories (Macau F3 Runner-up, Formula Ford Festival Winner, British F3 Champion and McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year).

A strong test for the Prost team caught Williams' eye, and he ended up in the team that was still scrambling to regain form, in the early stages of its relationship with BMW... a partnership which would only prove fruitful when Jenson had joined the ailing Benetton team. Having departed for BAR prior to Renault's glory days, and maintaining hopeful loyalty while the mediocre squad went through Honda ownership, you could be forgiven for thinking that, considering his early career form, Jenson was a talent wasted. Still, he is a master of handling a car in changeable conditions, and his debut win for Honda came in Budapest, 2006.

The Brawn era was crucial. Here he was, in a car that was dominant for less than half of the races that year. He comfortably saw off a frustrated Rubens Barrichello, and maintained great consistency when the Brawn was not the pick of the crop, as it had been in the early season races. His fight-back through the field (welcome Kobayashi!!!) was almost like watching kart racing again. Superb.

Thus, he earned his place at McLaren. In 2010, he was in a great media spotlight... many expected him to be thrashed by Lewis Hamilton. But he wasn't and finished only 26 points behind (not far at all with the current points system). Then in 2011, he went one better, and easily beat Lewis Hamilton, en route to becoming the best of the rest behind the dominant Sebastian Vettel. Last season, the quality and precision of his driving, and especially his overtaking, was a joy to behold.

This is a guy with an uncanny ability to perform when the chips are down (Montreal '11, etc, etc, etc) and he won't stay in difficulty for long. All this "Jenson is awful" bashing is completely unsupported and unwarranted, and is merely a knee-jerk reaction to recent events. Sure, Lewis Hamilton is a supreme talent, and possesses better outright speed, but Jenson is no slouch behind the wheel.

I gotta agree with most of what you say, but Coulthard was a McLaren legend. The only McLaren legend not to win a WDC.
