I researching alittle about which martial art's discipline to start because I'm considering a 2nd job at the Tilted Kilt as a bouncer. I was initially looking into Kali, which is the technique used in the BOURNE movie's but that is more of a stick fighting technique. I'm looking for the best hand/hand and submission style, any input?

As for hand to hand it doesn't get better then Wing chun. Also look for Bruce Lees book on Jeet Kune Do, its a great book and covers a lot of very knowledgeable information. Also I have found this video to be entertaining:

I joined a martial art's website and have been getting alot of good feedback but what has been recommended the most is I find a local school and discuss what my initial goal is. One of the biggest thing's for me is the discipline that is learned and achieved, god know's I need it LOL!

Well I watched the video and I must re-iterate "I am not an aninmal"! I'm not looking to dismember people but to only control a situation that may get out of hand with hopefully would not lead to lethal or crippling tactic's.

I dont want the sweet honey's to be scared of me so a proper submission hold, one I can use later wink wink, is most appropriate.

Personally, I've done a bit of kung fu and a bit of Tae-Kwon Do. Out of the two, Kung Fu was by far and away the better of the two in terms of fighting and self defence IMO, just because I felt it was more fluid and less static. However, it really does depend on your local school.

The first TKD school I went to was fun because we also got to play with swords (OK, so they were made of foam!) and to try out other things like Ju-Jitsu, but even with the self defence I was taught, I never thought I would be able to fend off an attacker. The second TKD school I went to focused more on personal fitness and again, I don't think I would ever have been able to fend off an attacker.

For me, the kung fu was the best - the techniques suited me well and I loved the mix of tai-chi and kung fu. We also used no external equipment so it was perfect for training at home, although apparently when we got to higher grades we would have been trained in traditional weapons such as swords and sticks. The only difficulty with working wtih partners and not equipment is that you get horrendously bruised (and I recommend Chinese black oil to help!). I once got up one morning after kung fu class to find both forearms entirely black with bruises - it's not a good look, particularly for a girl ;)

I don't know what it's like where you are, but most schools in the UK will let you join one lesson for free, so if you can do this, it might be worth checking out a few local schools to see which suits you best. I really want to take up kung fu again but haven't found anywhere nearby :(

Thank's for the info Selcouth_Feline and your advice matches the other's I have recieved. I was told to just checkout school's in my area, let them know my initial goal, and go from there. I actually think I'm gonna need to get back to the gym for atleast a month of heavy cardio and superset's before starting with a program.

Ahh, I wouldn't worry - beginner's classes shouldn't expect you to be too fit anyway so I'm sure you'll be fine without doing any prior training! Let us know if you decide to join a class and what sort of martial art you're doing :)
