The highly-rated Pole has been missing from the paddock since early 2011, having been seriously injured in a pre-season rallying crash.

Until recently, there were sporadic reports about the former BMW and Renault driver's recovery, and signs his initially horrifically-damaged arm was returning to health.

But the veteran correspondent for Switzerland's Blick newspaper, Roger Benoit, has now reported that information about Kubica has stopped flowing.

"Why has the talking stopped? Because - unfortunately - a comeback is nearly impossible," he wrote.

Probably for the best. It's sad he can't continue living his F1 dream, but it is what it is. He's alive and maybe one day down the road he can race some other vehicles again.

Would be such a shame and 'loss' of a quite brilliant prospect. :(:(:(

I will still keep hoping until i hear something official though.

At least he's not like Gilles or Wolfgang von Trips who never got to fulfill their future after a crash. At least he's alive.

I suspected that Kubica would never return to F1 after seeing the injuries, it's sad to see such a talent have his career cut short, but at the end of the day, it's kinda stupid to pursue such a dangerous extracurricular activity, where there is always a chance of serious injury. I'm surprised that Renault even allowed it, I would have banned such activities in the contract!

Such a shame, as Robert is a tremendous talent. Every time I see his name, the first thing I think of is that tremendous race he had in Singapore, back in 2010. Awesome driving.

Sadly, this news comes as little surprise, however. :(

I remember posting an answer to this on one of the threads at the time of the crash when lots on here were saying the same thing. It's pointless writing something like that into a contract, as legally that type of clause doesn't have any standing and is unenforceable (the courts will not acknowledge it), so it would basically just be a gentlemen's agreement. I fully agree that it was the wrong thing to do, and that he shouldn't be doing it from a purely professional viewpoint, but the team would have no way of legally stopping him if he insisted even if they had put such a term in his contract. In other words - it wouldn't have made any difference.
