I've seen a Toyota Prius literally EXPLODE.
I wasnt exactly by it, but from where i was, I could see the smoke and felt/heard the 2 big explosions which were almost like an earthquake. I thought it was like a gas tanker or gas station exploding, but the smell was this typical electrical fire smell, and by the tome I got to the place, I saw it was a car... completely charred and the owner (some famiy-bussiness man) sitting across the street crying head-in-hands. Bascially, he almost died.

VERY scary situation to be in. Because of things like this... I don't feel safe around electric cars just yet.

^^not entirely relevant... just throwing it out there

Happened to my dad back in 1991. He had a brand new bergundy Austin Montego estate, got back late one night and as he got out the car it exploded...we were asleep and the fire burnt through the brake cables so it rolled into the house....we had to climb out the back of the house. Always remember the flames were like 30 feet high!

Some great shots live and as it happened from Sky Sports.

Ted Kravitz for Sky Sports F1 was interviewing Alex Wurz right when the explosion occurred and you could see the garage exploding in the background.

There's nothing on YouTube but it was a gigantic fireball!

Looked like some guys were initially just emptying their extinguishers loosely onto the opening of the garage. The fire's way deeper inside, that will have no effect on the fire.

Maybe th ewinning car was afoul of the tech regs and they were just destrying the evidence?

sorry, too soon?

They were trying to fight the blaze in any way they could. I commend them for risking their lives to save the lives of others and all of their equipment.

:yes: Very brave. 31 were treated afterwards. Do you think they lost all their equipment?

Some of it got torched but not everything was lost. They've 2 weeks to recover.

From the video I've seen and from what I've read It seems to be only team mechanics fighting the fire, where were the track fire marshals and their fire truck?

The local fire crews came after. Their response wasn't actually that quick. They couldn't get down one end of the pit lane because of the smoke.

In my opinion, all garages should follow suit of the newer circuits and mandatory sprinkler systems should be installed in all garages. The teams say that a meeting is going to take place regarding what equipment should and what equipment shouldn't be in the garage.
