Nobody gave Lewis the script so whitmarsh had to think quick to rectify it, there was plenty fuel in the car.

Maldonado took provisional pole as planned and Bernie's idea was working. Lewis then took pole by over 5-tenths and that just wouldn't do, thus Lewis was sent to the back of the grid so Maldonado could be on pole.

Bernie wanted to do it for Frank's birthday but could only do it with one car. Look where the other Williams is.

Yeah, they have "competition cautions" when the crowd starts getting bored, they have inverted fields to artificially force faster cars to overtake slower guys, they have "Lucky Dogs" to help drivers that are really far behind have a chance to catch back up, and dump a bunch of "success ballast" into the cars of faster drivers to artificially give slower guys a chance at pretending them and their car are winners.

Oh, wait.... That's most other motorsports.

Sorry, after covering my walls, doors, windows ceiling and floor with the stuff I don't have any to spare.

Anyway, this tyre thing is more contrived than you think. I mean look at it, since Pirelli started making the tyres there's often been one surprise driver who's made their tyres last better than everyone else, sometimes a whole race while everyone else is making 2 or 3 stops. The teams and drivers wouldn't even need to be in on it, Bernie just has to make sure Pirelli supply that driver with a special set.
