What did the driver do to deserve starting last? Jack The team screwed the driver over and made the mistake so the team deserve a penalty. In any team with any driver, not just Lewis and McLaren. Take away one of the 8 engines, deduct some constructor's points, give them A GIGANTIC fine but don't, under any circumstances penalise the innocent party. The rules need a re-think.

Formula 1 is a team sport, they win as a team, they lose as a team, I don't see how you can separate driver and team, McLaren are the team and Lewis Hamilton is part of that team. I don't see how they team are screwing the driver; they are also screwing themselves, the amount of money they'll lose in constructor points monies is astronomical! It was a mistake by someone at the team, simple as that. By your reckoning, flipping the coin; should a driver make a mistake while in a good points position and bin the car, should the driver be fined "x" amount of money for losing the team "x" amount of points? In any TEAM sport, an individual can not be exempted from the teams actions!

I thought that Hamilton should have been penalised, however, I think a DQ was unfair. If I was a stewars, I'd make my point pretty clear, and be fair

Yes, McLaren didnt put enough fuel in, but that was ONLY on the last Q3 lap, therefore, I would have deleted the 2nd time and ordered Hamilton to start on the worn tyres from the 1st lap. I think that would have been fair.

F1 is supposed to cater to the fans but it's supremely annoying that we, as fans can do nothing about this. Many fans (not just of McLaren) have been let down today and it feels like Formula 1 doesn't realise, nor care.

No wonder so many people despise this sport. I love it but it's really difficult to love a sport that can be this atrocious.

Come on,even as a non Mclaren fan and someone who loves the sport,you must see that this judgement is OTT.Think about it,they have placed him behind a car that didn't even make the qualifying rules,Mr Karthikeyan in the HRT.

How the hell can that be fair.

Penalise the team then, not Hamilton. He didnt put the fuel in the car. He drove balls out to get a perfect lap and put it on pole half a second ahead of the next guy, all for nothing.

That'd be like a gang of chavs assaulting an old lady and stealing her purse and then the court sending the old lady to prison.

Sorry, but F1 is a team game. You win as a team, loose as a team. The driver is part of the team, so in theory, FIA is penalising the team as well.

But not directly. The driver is directly affected, the team indirectly. The team come off penalised as a secondary party because the driver's hard work and determination over that one, single flying lap that put them on pole is stamped on, crumpled up and thrown in the bin.

So, just think of the following scenario:
A driver wins a race but gets investigated for doing something stupid like whatever such as forcing another driver off the track so that the other one crashes in the last lap. Ok.
So, he gets disqualified or something. In your logic, the "hard working and determined" team didn't do anything wrong and shouldn't get penalized for that dufus mistake/violation by the moronic driver, right? So, the team should still receive their constructors points that they lost through the disqualification of the driver?? Gimme a break!

Why they choose to apply this rule today when they didn't choose to do so when Vettel stopped immediately after the Bahrain Grand Prix is worth a mention.

Okay,i'm new to these forums and don't know where you allegiance stand in F1 but you seem to have an over the top dislike of Mclaren or Lewis,i might be wrong.

Rather than go round the bush ill just come out and ask you: Do you think that Lewis being pushed to the very back of the grid fair? Is it a case of your dislike for a certain driver more than the actual team that actually duck up their drivers race.

I have no doubt that if it was a driver you like,you would not be defending the FIA decisions so vehemently.

As painful as it is for you to accept, what was said is only the reflection of truth. Rules are rules, it isn't anything about allegiance. With a team of Mclaren's caliber, one might expect more from them. Some dislike Mclaren because they are not doing what they are suppose to do, and that is winning races. Yet instead, the team is making mistakes over and over again. When I read what was issued to the teams, making reference to Mr. Sam Michael, I can feel that Sam is already fighting a loosing battle.

Speaking of Bahrain, the advantage of Hamliton using less fuel in Quali delivers a MUCH bigger advantage than what happened in Bahrain.

As a Mclaren and Hamilton fan I'm disappointed with the team for this but don't have any argument against the punishment for breaking the rules like this whether it was a mistake or not.

My first reaction was the decision was very harsh but thinking about it, the car has to remain legal at all times. This was a breach of the technical regulations. I'm not sure the Stewards had any real choice, he was disqualified from qualifying as the car ran below the fuel level, making it an illegal car. It isn't relevant if Hamilton gained an advantage or not. To be honest it's probably fair overall, as otherwise the Stewards have to decide the extent of the advantage in all cases, plus that would demean the technical regulations themselves if some breaches were deemed to not be worthy of punishment.

If this article is accurate than Mclaren had a chance to rectify the situation. The fact they knew he was under fuelled but didn't go into fuel saving mood until after his flying lap, puts them in a very bad light. It looks like they gambled on a token penalty.
