A very important round of testing is coming up at Mugello.

Gonzales will get a drive for Caterham.
D'Ambrosio will spend seat time in the Lotus E20.
Although McLaren have previously announced that Paffett and Turvey will share the driving for this round of testing, Lewis has said that he doesn't want to take the break, he wants to drive, so perhaps there will be changes for the McLaren line-up.

Yes Lewis is right! I believe it's important for McLaren to test with their race drivers. Maybe give Paffett and turvey half day each on day 1 then 1 each for Lewis and Jenson the following days.

IMO the next 4 scheduled track days are make or break for Ferrari. Having said that, I'm nowhere near as pessimistic about the F2012 as most pundits and the general public seem to be.

Yes, the car's performance is behind McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull and possibly Lotus on average. But I don't think its anywhere near as bad as some have portrayed. If I had to put a figure on it, I'd suggest that in Australia the F2012 was 1.2+ seconds per lap behind the best and, by Bahrain I'd put it at about half that (.6).

There are some positives, firstly I'd say that Ferrari would be very close to the best in terms of tire wear while at the same time having the largest window of performance in terms of ambient temperatures and track conditions. As well, last years woes of not being able to heat our tires has been completely fixed.

These next 4 days will also see the F2012 completely together as originally planned. The Spanish upgrade package was talked about even before the first day of testing. The deployment of the F2012 was planned this way because of the testing limitations. There was no way all the new parts of this radically different car could be tested in the time available. This made testing easier and provided time to fine tune part 2.

In reality there have been no significant upgrades (exhaust, sidepods, radiator, acer ducts etc) to the car since Australia, which means that the relative performance improvements have come simply from better understand the car.

Also, China and Bahrain were simply the worst tracks possible to expose the weaknesses of the F2012 - lack of traction driving out of corners and downforce in slow corners. Yet, in race trim the F2012 was mostly able to keep up.

It's also worth considering that, the F2012 still has not run with its designed exhaust. It has done 4 races with a makeshift system. A serious spanner was thrown in the works when testing began for the F2012. If we recall, the exhaust was almost immediately removed and a makeshift system added. The original exhaust pointed to the outside (just like McLaren, Sauber and Red Bull) but, was placed far further back. The result, it basically cooked the tires. I fully expect to see the original style exhaust back on the car by Barcelona, and this should provide a significant performance boost.

There was a report yesterday in Gazzetta dello sport that Ferrari will shift to a Sauber style exhaust and that it won't be shown until Friday practice at Barcelona. Personally I think this is very unlikely.

I would caution against over stating the expectations for Barcelona. I'd say the criteria for success would be to halve the gap, ie if we are .6 behind now, then to get to within .3 of the lead car would be a great effort. And, to put that in perspective, every team will be bringing major upgrades before Spain, so they will all improve significantly.

I'd expect both McLaren to be very focused on tire wear and drop off in race trim. Red Bull to increase top speed - probably by trying to reduce drag. Mercedes will probably look at tire wear but also at widening their tire optimum performance window.

I just hope common sense will prevail.

Tall order, but I hope so.

As far as I know, top teams will/should bring their real line-ups. Red Bull, Lotus, Mercedes... McLaren should do the same.

Could Mclaren be conspiring against their drivers by not letting them perform the tests? :superyikes:

 ..... :scratchchin:

Although I can see that Lewis is perturbed by the somewhat Jekyll and Hyde personality of his car from Saturday to Sunday, it can't be a bad idea to get feedback from other drivers. Another perspective and another seat of the pants opinion. I know I won't figure out something McLaren can't.

Posted this on the Lewis support thread, but maybe it's better suited here.

Spanky, I think Ferrari is where it is on a little bit of luck and a lottabit of Fernando. They're done in 2012 as far as the WCC is concerned not just because of the poor start, but because of the Massa component.

What McLaren should be testing is their pit stops, and the same on wheel nut system that Ferrari and Red Bull are using, 15 seconds a GP gained right there. :hehe:

Whitmarsh said they have their own version of that Ferrari/Mercedes gun. BUt he said he doesnt want to rush to use it because it would actually hace compounded the cross thread problem. Because its more enclosed, rectfying a cross thread ismore difficult. I think that was what he said...in the interview after the race.

The F1 site reports; After some careful assessment, HRT have announced they will not be attending next week’s Formula One test in Mugello, Italy. With planned upgrades to the Spanish team’s car not due for completion until after the session, they will instead concentrate on moving to their new headquarters.

"The start to the season was a little bit rushed for us and, since the cars were set up for the first time, we have been working on them at the Grands Prix,” explained team principal Luis Perez-Sala. “The team and the material have just got back from Bahrain after leaving for Australia in early March. And they return, for the first time, to the team’s new headquarters at the Caja Magica in Madrid.

“This move is very important for us and by not going to Mugello we can work thoroughly on the car to prepare for the Spanish Grand Prix. We won’t have the new upgrade package until then so we’ve preferred to focus on what can contribute more to us, which is teamwork at the headquarters. And there is a lot to do.”

HRT, who did not attend any of the three pre-season tests earlier this year, lie 12th in the 2012 constructor standings, with a best result of 20th place for Pedro de la Rosa in Bahrain. Following their withdrawal, the Mugello test on May 01-03 will now feature 11 teams.

Translation... we've got no money to ship equipment and personnel around for a test.

Of course, everyone knows 2012 will be when they oust lewis and jenson, in favor of truli and sutil.

I wonder how much will this slow them down... If it's even possible...

He IS giving the time gaps to Fernando. The ones to Felipe's gap you could almost get away with using the minute hand of a clock. :hehe:
