I would have to imagine its a serious bit of tubing that sends the air from the rear ring to do exactly what the f-ducts in 2010 were doing for greater straight line speed.

Has there been any definitive explanation of what merc are doing?

Nope! No one seems to know where the air is exiting for definite.

Yeah, I hate those silent winds - nobody seems to know where they originated, but they stink up the entire room!! :banghead:

So I caught the little blurp on the front page here about Red Bull bitching about merc.

Christian Horner is quite the dbag when he isn't winning.

It's easy to see how thick the trailing edge of the Merc rear uprights are when you're looking for it.

I can see how people see that. I'm not defending him. However, I did read that there was a "gentlemen's agreement" made last year between the teams to not pursue that area of technical development, so perhaps there is merit in him being bothered by it?? Let me know what y'all think!!

And he is still questioning it after the Mercedes wing being deemed legal again on Weds.

It was mentioned on Sky (can't remember if it was Ted Kravitz or a commentator), that by protesting, Mercedes will be forced to give an explanation in front of the stewards and the other teams. In which case they'll find out how it works, and that was the real motivation behind the complaints.

Yes I heard that, but still think RedBull should just accept they don't have the upper hand this year and get on with improving their own car instead of worrying about others.....

After Nico's pole and win in China, can anyone accurately explain how Mercedes W-Duct functions. Does stall of front wing increase with speed until DRS activation at which is full stall.

Ted Kravitz of Sky Sports F1 HD explains all:

Apart from some mention at a race last year of Merc testing the w duct during the practice sessions at a race weekend there doesn't seem to be much said about it or who, if anyone is using it.

Here's a vid about it but I don't know about how accurate it is.

If Kravits video calvins48 posted above is correct and there is only 1 exit slot on each side under the front wing then I'd guess Merc are not using this w duct.
