Anybody!

My father-in-law is Ferrari and Formual 1 nut, we have been debating the significance of the "bar codes" on the F1 Ferrari. Can anybody clear this up?

As texas says, it's because tobacco advertisement isn't allowed so the barcodes are a replacement for the actual branding.

Oh, and welcome to the forum BTW :D

The barcodes also go back a long way with Marlboro back to the 80's with McLaren at the non tobacco races. :)

Let me see if I follow. The "bar code" is the actual bar code on a Pack of Marlboro's.:shock:

Nah, it just looks like a barcode, Rothmans used to do the same in their days as Williams' main sponsor, or replacing Rothmans with "Racing". :)

It's an interesting form of marketing really...sort of subliminal (not sure that's quite the word I'm after). The brand name isn't there, but most people know what the brand is anyway.

Yeah, everybody knows the bar codes pertain to Marlboro. I wonder if it's strictly speaking allowed. I think Mosley should investigate. If McLaren were involved, I have no doubt he would. :)

What about Alfa Romeo? They used to run similar Marlboro liveries to McLaren in the early 80's. :P

Yes alot of people's perception is that they ARE an actual barcode from say a pack of Marlboro's but I have checked and an actuall barcode is very different. I do agree that they lead one to the perception of tobacco advertising but it's not blatant, kinda like not actually breaking the rule's but "pushing the envelope" so to speak. F1 at it's best, bending but not breaking  .

Well I guess Mosley who is from the UK loves Ferrari. Everyone in the UK loves Ferrari so that's why you should to. :D

Barcodes or the stripes are on the ducati also they are subliminal advertising by marlboro If they were to sponsor Ferrari and not have any marking on the car what so ever it would be pointless people would not know they are a team sponsor
