Everybody Loves Raymond as well! How they ever became popular I'll never know.

Everybody Loves Raymond is in a class of its own. Funniest sh*t ever. I have seen a couple of british comedies in my day and was not thoroughly impressed, so from that and from the things said on this thread I notice there is a distinct difference in comical tastes between europe and the u.s., but I haven't analyzed the british comedies enough to be able to point out what those differences are exactly.

Is anybody able to explain what the differences are? Like different styles, things that UK folk find funny that americans don't, and vice versa?

Shameless though! Much better in the UK! :o

Would you classify it as a comedy though? Not sure I would...

Black comedy - for sure. Has some very funny scenes. Maybe a Comedy/Drama.

ELR used to be funny - its a bit old now. I think the style of American Comedy has definetily progressed over the lastr 10 years, and become much more 'intelligent'. Thats in no means an insult to the comedy before, but I found it was a lot more obvious story lines etc.

Differences in style of UK/US. I dont actually think there is that big a difference in styles to be honest. Funny is funny, no matter where you are from

Are you sure?

I am sure MoA will be able to answer that for us better.

I would imagine people like Roy chubby brown, graham Norton, Russell brand, and billy connelly might not bridge the gap.

Also the other way, have you tried watching the American versions of shameless and the office

As my opinion was requested, I find American comedy to be more literal; British comedy tends to be a bit more cerebral... but I haven't watched too much actual television in the last two years, ditched cable TV back in 2010 and haven't looked back, from what I saw of American television I wasn't very impressed, too many adds and massive over censorship!

Most good American television currently is on HBO. Game of Thrones starts this weekend. Mad Men started last week after a nearly two year hiatus. Bored to Death and Curb Your Enthusiasm, wrapped up few months ago, also very funny.

There are lots of good TV shows on Showtime...

Yes, as mentioned above, and I love them both.

Shameless USA, is much better than UK version.

And The US office is outstanding. I love the UK version, and thing that is great too - but they are such different beasts, its hard to relate them.

 Totally agree. I thought 'Bored to Death' to was brilliant - excellent casting of all the three main male roles.

Battlestar and Game of Thrones was good.

Not sure about Pacific, I did not relate to the people as much as I did in Band of Brothers

Best American comedy I've seen was Frasier. Cheers was on when I was a kid but the ones I've seen since have been good.

I found Friends to be, well
