I'm disappointed to see threads like this. It may be worth me pointing out AGAIN that HRT have never actually finished last in a championship. The past two seasons, they've finished ahead of Virgin! So it's not all a lost cause.

Hate directed to the newest three teams is unsupported and unwarranted. They've started from scratch, rather than buy out a current team. This is difficult work, and it takes time to ascend the ladder. Caterham are now well and truly snapping at the heels of the midfield pack, and the times in qualifying show that they are indeed rather close.

Even managing to qualify for this race shows good progress has been made in less than a week. It's Virgin / Marussia that have the development issues over a season, not HRT. And now the all-CFD approach has been ditched, they too might be set for better times.

Agreed. As an operation, I think HRT is WAY more efficient than Marussia at least. With a really modest budget and chasing deadlines like mad the past 3 years, they've done a stellar job still making it for the grid race after race. I'm chuffed about their qualifying performance as well, Msia is not an easy place to keep up with the front runners and I would put money on them finishing yet again in front of Marussia this year.

I dont get this bashing HRT sure they are not the fastest but they dont have cash to just chuck at finding tenths of seconds.
I think HRT are doing a top job with the cash they have actually had on getting the car on the grid and qualifying for races.

I do think thou that these newish teams Virgin, Caterham and HRT should be given more testing time during the season so they are able to progress their cars up until they reach the midfield. This should sort out their issue with speed instead of them just using races as testing sessions.

Getting back to the topic, I kind of agree with the OP here. HRT and Virgin/Marussia have made no real progress since entering F1. They take up grid slots that could go to teams that will be competitive and not just there to make up the numbers.

The fact that they signed up on Max Mosley's promise of a cut-price F1 that never really happened tells me all I need to know about their prospects of moving up the grid. Looking at the list of teams that were turned down makes alarming reading indeed.

For me, it's not so much the fact that they're slow, more how they've been incapable of ever doing proper testing and having their car sorted for the first race. Having a raceable car from the off is surely the minimum acceptable standard of what is supposed to be the top class of racing in the world, not turning up and running installation laps in qualifying, that is just a joke. It's hard to make a quick car. It shouldn't be hard just to get them going in the first place.

I can see why no one would like them, but they're in because they have a car and they're within the 107% in Q1. So like it or not, they're here, live with it.

It's not a question of liking the team. I don't like Ferrari or McLaren but I do think they've earnt their place on the grid.

It's a question of suitability. Are HRT (and Marussia) suitable for F1? I don't think they are.

They are suitable given the rules, so like I said, live with it. The FIA can change the rules for next year, and any case, I've got a feeling that they may not make it to 2014 when the engine reqs and the major redesign kick in.

There's a 13th slot available for new teams and I don't see perspective teams bangin' on the door to get into that spot, so I think the argument that they're keeping other teams out is bullcrap!
