ESPNF1:
Red Bull has devised "a clever development" to compensate for the loss of the blown diffuser, according to Renault's Jean Francois Caubet.

Having pioneered the use of exhaust gases to generate downforce, in 2011 the Red Bull was the class of the field. New regulations that ban exotic engine maps and restrict the exit points of the exhausts were therefore expected to hit Red Bull harder than many of the other teams, but Caubet - head of the team's engine supplier Renault - said that it has found away [sic!] round the new rules.

"Formula One is about creativity," Caubet is quoted by Auto Bild. "And although the rules have changed, we have worked with Red Bull and found a solution to compensate for the loss of performance. It is not the same as before ... but a clever development that could make the difference."

Adrian Newey himself admitted that the team was still exploring options within the current exhaust regulations.

"The exhaust is one of the areas in which we still have some ideas up our sleeves," Newey said.

Mind games or real advantage? It's AN we're talking about, so...

Interesting, i have no idea what the hell this could be! :scratchchin:

They're also claiming 35 additional hp better fuel economy and improved reliability so might as well call the season over now.

How's that possible? I thought engine development was frozen at the moment

That's why they call it a 'clever' development

Yes, but the article suggests that it is something engine related having an impact on aerodynamics, and is a completely innovative concept. An area that is extremely limited by the rules (ie, no scope for innovation). So i think that article is slightly misleading. If it's just trick aero concepts then that would be unsurprising, but that isn't what the article suggests.

Yes, during the season once the engine is presented to the FIA. Over the winter all the manufacturers work on developing their engines....

Throughout the season, the engine companies can request changes for 'reliability reasons'. You can bet there is a performance improvement also.
In 2008, Renault were caught out by this, where the factory, and customer Ferrari engines gained 30 hp through the season....

It was actually pointed out that with the ban on off throttle diffusers Renault could use mappings for better power in I guess what you would call regular use.

Thing is I am sure the others would also net gains.

Until they prove it on the track its called :bs:

I should have been more clear... what bud said.

Thanks for clarifying that bud.
