Just came across this little article and thought I'd share it.Homosexuality and sport are issues that historically do not mix well. However, in recent times the sporting world has begun to accept that some of those competing at the highest levels are gay. Former Welsh rugby captain Gareth Thomas came out publicly in 2009 and more recently England cricketer Steven Davies revealed his homosexuality.
In fact there are now openly gay men and women in most major sports. Even football with its reputation of homophobia now has a openly gay player, albeit, in the Sweden’s fourth tier.
But one big sport without an openly gay competitor is Formula One. Why is this? F1 has existed for over 60 years so surely there must be some gay drivers amongst all those who have fought for the World Championship?
How do you think F1 would react to an openly gay driver if one were to come out this year? I would hope it would be positively from both the teams and the fans but homosexuality and sport has always been a difficult and controversial issue.

I mean, a huge (and somewhat unnecessary) fuss was made back in 2005 when Narain Karthikeyen became the first Indian F1 driver, and again in 2007 when Lewis Hamilton joined the ranks, but we've yet to see a driver ever come out as gay or bisexual.
And another interesting point... do we honestly think every single F1 driver in the past has been straight? A pretty remarkable clean-sweep if you ask me...
But how would people react? I guess they would loose respect for him after seeing him grope his boyfirend's nether regions in front of the garage! I mean how is an engineer to know when the driver is not checking him out? Or when you go to tighten his 5 point seatbelt and you see a wry smile on his face?A gay guy won't even be able to sit in the car for the morning sessions because of you know....

Its ok to make fun of fat people then? A lot of that goes on here unchallenged, I'm sure the same can be said about teenage suicide from fat jokes, so where does it end? Theres a stigma among some groups in the PC world where its a no no to go go. I have known via work and have gay friends, they too would have had a laugh at it.

Hmm. I can't help but feel all these accusations of ridiculousness and pointlessness, in relation to the thread topic, are an attack on me and my judgement in posting it. In which case I would like to offer an explanation, seeing as it appears to be desired by the restless participants here.
I simply came across an article on the internet and thought it might be of interest. This is because there are sadly still issues surrounding homophobia and sport, and I initially thought that this could be an interesting debate, unlike one which we have seen prior. On this forum that is.
I miscalculated badly. I overestimated the tolerance and maturity of some members here. It appears we don't possess the ability to step back and consider, to debate like adults and to analyse life, here in this neck of the woods. Actually, the fact that the issue is so important is reflected in the INABILITY and INCOMPETENCE of holding together a civilised discussion on REAL ISSUES in REAL LIFE.
As the OP, I suggest that this thread is locked. The answer to the thread title is startlingly clear, and has been made so by the behaviour in this thread. There is no more to say here. Real life issues are clearly uncharted territory for the rabble that congregate in sports forums. Disappointing... but to be expected, unfortunately.
