I feel that the story of Vitantonio Liuzzi has been a somewhat sad and unfortunate one, to be honest.

Back in the late summer of 2004, I remember watching Liuzzi cruising masterfully to the F3000 title at Monza, and he was duly tipped to be F1's next star. Red Bull had him under their wing, and he shared a seat with Christian Klien in 2005 at the team that had just bought out Jaguar. ITV commentator Martin Brundle remarked that Liuzzi was a guy to watch, and that Red Bull held him as if he were a diamond.

Sadly the results never came, not that he was ever given the equipment to attain anything major. Messing around in midfield and back-end teams may well have had an overall detrimental effect and I feel the Italian's true potential was never realised. Just goes to show... if you're not in the right place at the right time, your career could be knackered. :(

Some guys don't translate well to F1, it's weird but there it is, I remember Tonio being touted as the next big thing way back in Karts, but lets face it even in the mediocre cars he's been in there's been no real signs of brilliance, he got less than half the point Sutil got in his full year at Force India, I'd expect more from a talented Rookie ( I've noticed rookie's, if talented get half the points there team mate gets).

What do we all reckon about his chances of retaining his HRT drive, alongside Pedro de la Rosa?

Pedro did an interview recently and didn't even mention Tonio, chances I'd say, non existent

He does have a champion's name!

He is a champion, He won the Karting World Championship in 01, that is no mean feat! Pure driving as Senna called it.

I'm surprised every time I hear he's still got a foot in F1, imo he's not made any impression but he could be more successful going elsewhere.

Hey everyone, been a while since I posted.

Anyway, Tonio has a had longer career than some supposed superstars. Look at Magnussen, he was supposed to be the greatest thing since Senna. I remember meeting Mark Webber in Melbourne in 1997 and he said if the race was wet then look for Jan to win on debut. About midway through the same year I read Jackie Stewart actually took him around silverstone in a manual car to teach him about changing gears. Big disappointment of talent.

Tonio is another super talent that just don't come to grips with F1, just like Sato, Bourdais, Pizzonia,Sutil (maybe not super talented), Zanardi (love Alex) and I'd even put Jarno Trulli in this category despite his higher rate of success. In his karting days Trulli was unstoppable and destined for greatness and he nearly won in his debut year at Austria with Prost but since then its been a big disappointment if you ask me. Sometimes its the car and sometimes its the driver, sometimes both. In Tonio's case I'd say its probably relying on talent and not putting in the hard yards with the engineers like a Vettel, Alonso, Schumacher or Senna would. Maybe he concentrated too much on his image rather than intelligence. Probably a heck of a nice guy though.

Nice to be back

Cheers

Here is a really good article on Jan Magnussen and how he didn't manage to transcend his obvious talent across to F1.

The part about Jackie Stewart giving him a driving lesson is on the last page.

I think its a good article and shows that these young guns really struggle to match seasoned competitors who have the experience. I'm going to watch Toro Rosso next year with interest cause I think they were mad to boot Algusauri. I think he would have been a good benchmark for Ricciardo. I don't know much about Vergne but he comes across as bit arrogant already and for me seems a little Bourdais-ish. I'll give him 3 races though before I rate him as a driver.
