Formula One related discussion.

Just came across this little article and thought I'd share it.

Homosexuality and sport are issues that historically do not mix well. However, in recent times the sporting world has begun to accept that some of those competing at the highest levels are gay. Former Welsh rugby captain Gareth Thomas came out publicly in 2009 and more recently England cricketer Steven Davies revealed his homosexuality.

In fact there are now openly gay men and women in most major sports. Even football with its reputation of homophobia now has a openly gay player, albeit, in the Sweden’s fourth tier.

But one big sport without an openly gay competitor is Formula One. Why is this? F1 has existed for over 60 years so surely there must be some gay drivers amongst all those who have fought for the World Championship?

How do you think F1 would react to an openly gay driver if one were to come out this year? I would hope it would be positively from both the teams and the fans but homosexuality and sport has always been a difficult and controversial issue.

Your thoughts?

I mean, a huge (and somewhat unnecessary) fuss was made back in 2005 when Narain Karthikeyen became the first Indian F1 driver, and again in 2007 when Lewis Hamilton joined the ranks, but we've yet to see a driver ever come out as gay or bisexual.

And another interesting point... do we honestly think every single F1 driver in the past has been straight? A pretty remarkable clean-sweep if you ask me...

Generally I'd have to say a big "who cares?" If someone wants to be homosexual then that is up to them.

Indeed the fuss was unnecessary. They are not the first coloured drivers in F1 so why was there all the fuss?

Not at all.

I think it's more a process of discovery than desire...

I'm in shock :yikes: I thought all English cricketers were openly gay!

Well I think there's a chance that there really has been an all straight grid to date. A chance. They give a % of population as gay, like 10% or such, but that ratio does not spread evenly over the various demographics. I am a licenced electrician. My local IBEW union has about 8000 members. I can assure you not close to 800 of them are gay. I don't know any, but I bet I could count them on my hands. My local is about 99% male. That is not the same ratio as the whole population. I work in construction. If we call that a demographic, we include the other building trades. I would guess the % of gays there is even less than in my local union.

I think vettel is in the back of all our minds in this thread.

:hehe: I'm j/k, he's gay in the non homosexual way. I'd still hate him just as much if he came out of the closet, is what I'm trying to say.

Yeah, I mean taking away the looks and the way he talks in general...he has shown almost zero interest in big boy toys (aircrafts and the works) and women! Or has he been with anyone?

The only relation I've heard about with him and a woman was naming his car 'kinky kylee'. And 'kinky kylee' could be a dude's stage name who gave him the best night of his life for all we know :hehe:

Jokes aside, if drivers wanna sit on pole in more ways than one, I don't care.

BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA YOU LIKE THAT?!?! Very clever of me, imo
