Interested to hear people's views on the sentencing. On the whole thing really.

A momentous day for the family. Two of the five strong gang who set upon Stephen have been jailed.

However, I wonder if this case would have ever received the press/police attention had he been white. I suspect not, in fact I wonder if it would have ever been solved. I'm strongly against any form of discrimination - that includes so-called 'positive discrimination' which I feel often bolsters racist hatred in this Country.

Great news with regards to the sentencing

Mind you, the disappearance and murder of Joanna Yeates in December 2010 was pretty high profile, and she was white.

And looking back to the year that Lawrence was killed, 1993, then another high profile crime comes into mind... the murder of James Bulger by Jon Venables and Robert Thomson. Bulger was also white, but then again, levels of interest in that crime were boosted by the very young ages of both victim and killers....

Just thought I'd mention those things though, it is a rather interesting discussion point... what separates a notorious crime from one that goes relatively unnoticed...

Any danger of us getting your views first?

Why? So you can disagree?
Well anyway, my views are that Im pleased they've eventualybrought these men to justice, despite having evaded it and having freedom for 18yrs,a luxury they denied Stephen Lawrence. Whilst I agree with Stephen(forum Stephen) about disliking any form of discrimination either positive or negative, I think there was undoubted negative descrimination by the police early on in the investigation.
I think, despite the huge sadness at the loss of Stephen's life, issues regarding this case have moved forward tremendously...with still a way to go.
I have huge respect for Stephen's mother.

Not at all. I just find it bizzare that you open a thread requesting everyone else's opinion but don't offer your own one. That's all. See no need for any agro' or drama to be created here at all.

Requsting/interested in - sounds like the same thing to me. Either way, you're looking for the opinions of others.

However, I'm not getting into a pointless argument or a final word contest with you over this. No need to manufacture drama on this thread.

Sorry I did not remember that without some reminder, my bad.

Bringing race into this is just another reason why discrimination exist today. :bs:

Can't speak for the UK, but in America, history has scores of minorities killed by gangs of whites and not much being made it of it, on the contrary a white man being killed by gang of minorities would indeed national news. A utopian society would not see the color of our skin as a difference, but we're not there and the actions of the past, do have a tremendous impact on the course of the future.

The point is the boy was attacked purely because of his race and no other reason. It caused a huge stir becuse it highlighted racism within the police force(there were mistakes and complacency that prevented the culprits being caught) and only now 18yrs later have two of the perpetrators been brought to justice. It's something of a landmark case becuase it has brought about changes to the justice system

Have to agree with Texasmr2 here. Every time someone of a different racial origin is attacked it is always labelled as a race crime regardless of if it was or wasn't.
