I thought it would be helpful if we all contributed ideas of what to buy for tricky people. All price ranges. Here are a few ideas of mine.

Girlfriends/wives/mothers(depending on age)- pandora jewellery: lush porducts: Ugg boots: Assorted motorsport merchandise:Jo malone perfume and body lotion: Radley handbag: spa days: Jamie Oliver cook books: other books:Fake fur throws (the sort that look real and are soft and snuggly-not the cheap sort): tickets to somewhere nice:hotel chocolate stuff (especially milk chocolate&chilli): clothes(errors can be made here!!)
PLEASE NOTE: Buying practical things like irons and cooking equipment is not a good idea for females for Christmas!! Buy something personal and get brownie points by taking the female to the sales and buying her the practical item then

Whiskey etc: Tickets to Silverstone-F1, moto GP or anything else: sports gear: DVD's: computery-gadgety-wirey sort of things(girls this can be fraught with danger!) Guys...help needed in this area, males are difficult!!

Please add suggestions. Very young and quite a bit older old men..particularly difficult!!

I'm not entirely sure I'm the best person to gather data from, but I quite like books on mathematics and physics, the odd funny t-shirt, a decent mug (to replace the ones that get broken by certain clumsy members of the team)...just little things I guess.

Sounds about right to me though I don't have any problems with alcohol. We get on very well in fact!

Some family members have started sending the money they would normally spend on a persons present to charity. Pretty decent thing to do really to help those who need a roof over their heads rather than buying some middle class kid something they don't need like an X-Station or a Playbox and other such ultimately useless gadgets.

Men are easy to buy for! women are difficult!!

But anyways.... buying for guys. Let's see:

1. Stuff we like. We prefer stuff we like over stuff we need. What we like we need.

2. Stuff we need. ie clothes, perfume... since we rarely buy clothes or stuff we need........ its ok to get them as gifts. Specially gifts we were not counting on. We may not show the most excitement over getting clothes... but in the end we do need it. And by need it, i mean we like it when people compliment us on our smell or nice tie or nice shoes, or nice watch.

2a) Clothes are tricky. There are some kind of clothes we dont really need. Clothes we need are: clothes people are going to be able to notice/compliment upon. Socks and underwear... the only reason we need more than 1 pair is because we can't do laundry everyday. The more its someone else doing laundry for us... the less socks and undies we need.

So, look into our drawers.... does your male in question have at least 1 pair of socks*, or 1 pair of undies?? if so, we dont need anymore. Bottom line: if nobody will notice i'm wearing something new... might as well be wearing something old.

*Males above 25yrs do need 2 pairs of socks: one for work/dress, one for sports/play.

3. Fancy, breakable things that sit on tables. Dont get us these. They are useless and a waste of money. Unless its a LED 3D 42" with its matching cabinet. But a TV cabinet is not a table... so i guess the above holds true: dont get us stuff that sit on tables.

4. Stuff that makes work/life easier... this falls in the stuff we need rather than stuff we'd like. We may not always know we want it... but when we get it, it is pretty useful. Like "whoa! I would have never thought a cushion would have made my work chair all that comfy" or "hmmm no wonder I couldnt cut my bread, now with these knives it seems as it happens magically". New razor, razor blades etc..... even though we use them almost everyday; some of us dont actually know they need to be replaced and new models have come out since 1985. This is more a priority for SINGLE men! married men or men living with women may already have this kind of stuff. So yeah... this tuff makes make life easier.

5. Tools. We like having stuff that we think we need or will need sometime in life. Although 9/10 times something breaks, we call "the guy".... we like to have the pro tools for the job, and even better: we like it when women show us they think we COULD do said job. Basically, this is the whole purpose of having tools and stuff: by having tools, people think we can actually fix things.

6. Stuff that breaks over stuff that lasts a lifetime. We prefer things that wear out and/or break over stuff we could give our grandchildren to use. In our minds... we'll never have kids, let alone grandchildre. And we'll never be 60.

7. Beer... we like beer. A Women... we like women. Anything that makes achieving these goals easier... we like AND therefore need.

Flea- women are SO much easier than men! But yes tools, I forgot tools. Unlike most women men do like to get practical items for gifts.
Fancy breakable things for tables....Id never get those for a man! And clothes I always make sure can be returned. Difficult though when you receive clothing as a gift to say "thanks, thats nice, er did you keep the receipt?"

A long time ago when I first began dating my wife, I gave her a swiss army knife as a present. It wasn't the only present, but I took SOOOOO much ribbing for it. Needless to say, 25 years later, she's still got the knife and the other day at a party our host couldn't find a wine bottle opener and tada! Ran out to the car and whipped out the quarter century old swiss army knife.
