Vettel's problem makes sense on a technical level. Oil leak in gearbox = excess heat = change up at lower revs to reduce generated heat (and therefore wear). The fact that he could still set quick laps is irrelevant considering the nature of his problem, and considering his probable potential pace. I can't believe people are giving this conspiracy value, it's almost as ridiculous as the Glock/Hamilton one that started 3 years ago.

Vettel set the fastest lap.....on lap 68....with a poorly gearbox? Anyway Im really not bothered if Red Bull wanted to give Mark a win. They had everything else sewn up, didnt interfere with the championship and didnt harm anyone else in another team. I dont suppose we'll ever know

It hurt Alonso, he would of been 3rd in the championship

But that's alright to happen to the professional toy thrower, init?

No it isnt alright. I take back my previous comment. I wasnt quite with it last night(heavy session at a luxury spa :P ) I wonder if it was ReBull and the drivers werent in on this . To be honest I doubt Alonso is bothered if he's 3'rd or 4th. Like Lewis if you dont win, game over, try agen next year.

I think most teams allow the higher placed driver from the previous season to have the lower number on their car. Thus I feel that Jenson will certainly carry the number 3 on his car next season.

The only team that deviates from this tradition is Mercedes, who keep giving Michael Schumacher a lower number than Nico Rosberg, even though MS has never beaten Nico in a championship in which they've shared the same car.

Except if the world champion changes teams - he will take the number one with him to the new team no matter what its constructors position was.
Not sure what happens if the world champion retires. Will his former team have a '0' and '2' on their cars (happened in a few instances in the past)?

To the best of my knowledge this has happened twice both times with Damon Hill.. His number was '0' in 1993 because Nigel Mansell had left Williams for Indy Cars. His team mate for 1993 Alain Prost took the number '2' which was really Prost's lucky number since he won 3 of his four WDC's with the number 2.

Then in 1994 Hill kept the number '0' because Prost retired and Senna came and took Prost's number '2'

Well by right, Button must wear the no.3 next year.

And yeah, Mercedes lose some respect for doing that. Its not a big deal but its an unfair mark on Rosberg's efforts for them.

The numbers should just be done away with. Makes no sense to have them changing every year, and they can't even be used for identification purposes when they're tucked in somewhere between all the bank, tech, and alcohol ads.

Even better, I wish they'd just embrace the name abbreviations - HAM, MSC, etc.

Before you bring "facts" into an argument, it is customary to have some.

Well I don't see any facts or anything in the least credible in the theory that Vettels gearbox was fine but Red Bull wanted to gift Webber a win.

As for facts in my comments, there are a few if you read what I wrote. Vettels gearbox was at or nearing the end of its life cycle - fact. Vettels was on wet weather settings as evidenced by his rain light being on which can only be done by changing the cars settings ratehr than a switch on the light or in the cockpit - fact. The wet weather settings will entail less harsh gear settings aimed at reducing wheelspin so puts less strain on the gear box - another fact. So what say you again about not seeing any facts in my comment? Thought so.

I believe that Vettel had a new gearbox for this race as he DNF'd in Abu Dhabi - therefore they could change it without penalty. That's what i heard i think on the BBC coverage anyway. Regardless, that makes no real difference as a brand new part can still fail. I agree about the wet weather settings though. BBC commentary mentioned it didn't they... one half of which is DC. Enough said! :hehe:

You are right. new gear box.

BBC commentary did mention that no one had a new gear box left and so if this is accurate it won't have been a new one but the BBC have been wrong before.

Wrong fact. New gearbox.

Vettels was on wet weather settings as evidenced by his rain light being on which can only be done by changing the cars settings ratehr than a switch on the light or in the cockpit - fact.

So? Redbull can easily switch his car to wet weather mode for the world to see his flashing light and believe his gearbox really has issues.

This isn't another fact, it just supports the previous.

For the record, I couldn't really care if Webber was gifted the victory...but the conspiracy theorists have a field day with this one. Last race of the season, Webber's never won before and he's got a couple of WDC positions to gain, convenient time for a 'gearbox' problem for the guy who's won everything, and even with a gearbox problem the guy makes fastest lap when Webber is ensured in control of the race.

Coincidence? Still, might be...but businesses don't always tell the truth to public which is completely understandable.
