Vettel's problem makes sense on a technical level. Oil leak in gearbox = excess heat = change up at lower revs to reduce generated heat (and therefore wear). The fact that he could still set quick laps is irrelevant considering the nature of his problem, and considering his probable potential pace. I can't believe people are giving this conspiracy value, it's almost as ridiculous as the Glock/Hamilton one that started 3 years ago.

Vettel set the fastest lap.....on lap 68....with a poorly gearbox? Anyway Im really not bothered if Red Bull wanted to give Mark a win. They had everything else sewn up, didnt interfere with the championship and didnt harm anyone else in another team. I dont suppose we'll ever know

It hurt Alonso, he would of been 3rd in the championship

But that's alright to happen to the professional toy thrower, init?

Do you actually understand the impact and consequences of an oil leak in a gearbox? There was nothing actually wrong with the actual functionality of the box, but if the oil had gone completely the box would have totally seized (and/or melted) and it would have been game over. That obviously didn't happen during the race.

I think I read that the payments are done in arrears, so this year's payment was from last year's results....

Correct. Which means the RB7 was built on the cheap from 2009's earnings. Which means the RB8 should be a real nightmare for the other teams.

...Look at the facts - the gearbox was nearing the end of its life-cycle, ...

No, it was a new gearbox, courtesy of Abu Dhabi. As per SR 28.6.A, a mechanical DNF entitles a driver to skip the cycle and install a new gearbox without penalty:

Any driver who failed to finish the race at the first, second, third or fourth of the five Events for reasons which the technical delegate accepts as being beyond the control of the team or driver, may start the following Event with a different gearbox without a penalty being incurred.

...the team kept ordering Vettel to slow down (why would they risk loosing 2nd place?),..

There was no fear of Vettel losing second position, the fear was for him overtaking Webber. Witness the FACT that Vettel set fastest lap on lap #45, 1:16.310 to Webber's 1:16.375. The plan was for one wonky gear to let Webber past but Webber failed to close the gap by even one tenth of a second until Rocky told Vettel to shortshift third gear as well.

...Vettels rear light was flashing - thins only happens when the car is changed to a wet weather set-up....

No, it happens any time the driver trips the proper switch on the steering wheel. Set-up got nothing to do with it.

...The conspiracy theory has no credibility at all.

The pot calls the kettle black.

Before you bring "facts" into an argument, it is customary to have some.

I miss the smiley here because surely you can't believe that, can you? Mateschitz has enough dough in his piggy bank to run half the paddock by himself 8-)

Of course lap times will fall the more laps you run, even with a gearing problems. hello fuel loads??

And the RB7 was hardly done on the cheap, it was created with the biggest spend under the RRA out of all the teams. Redbull is a Monster of an energy drink company.

True...let's hope Car No.3 is investigated and will receive due penalty in 2012 due to this infringement from Redbull.

Car 3 will be Button...

Assuming that McLaren don't switch the numbers around, there is nothing in the rules that the higher places driver gets the lowest allocated number.

For those of you that don't know, car numbers are allocated as per the previous years constructors positions, e.g 1 & 2 will be Red Bull, 3 & 4 will be McLaren, 5 & 6, Ferrari, 7 & 8, Mercedes.

PS: I know you know this Bud, it seems many don't realise!

Except if the world champion changes teams - he will take the number one with him to the new team no matter what its constructors position was.
Not sure what happens if the world champion retires. Will his former team have a '0' and '2' on their cars (happened in a few instances in the past)?

Just had a chance to watch. I was happy to see Webber win, but a bit of a bummer because it was due to Seb's bad gearbox. The shameful conspiracy theorist in me thinks RBR manufactured this "gearbox issue" to get webber the win and hopefully catapult him into second in the championship without having to say they ordered Seb to slow down.
#284934
I don't think McLaren would do that to Button, he earned the number 3 especially if MW favours Jens :hehe:

Yeah good question in the past they ran the 0-2 like you said but the number 1 is a powerful advertising tool and attraction for sponsors now days, but I don't think any driver would want to wear the number 1 if he didn't earn it.
