Oh, BTW... I was meaning to ask but kept forgetting. What was up with the poppies pinned to the racing suits this weekend?

Remembrance day for Commonwealth nations.

F1 rarely goes this late into the year, so we never get to see Remembrance Day observed. Nice to see the poppies... without any fussing around like the situation in football.

By the looks of things that statement may well become defunct in the coming years.

Interesting post Fred! So could Red BUll have been using exhaust gasses to heat the tyres? Could this be how they get such a fast quali lap? Lewis hinted at something ususual about the Red Bull in Q3. Could it be they can turn this facility on and off when they want allowing them to get tyres up to temperature quickly? If this is the case something could have gone wrong with it on Sunday.

If overheating it was, it more likely would have been because Vettel didn't strictly adhere to the warm-up procedure, or because the fuel mapping decided he was in need of a DNF. I've not encountered any speculation they purposely were using exhaust to heat the tyre. The burning bodywork, according to Horner, was an odd bit that had come loose. There also is the possibility they overheated a suspension member to failure, which launched a CF missile into the tyre as it went south.

This is a new F1 "blogger" who obviously takes a less serious view of the sport.

Debris penalised for Vettel puncture

Current world champion Sabastien Vettel’s retirement in last week’s Abu Dhabi grand prix has been surrounded in controversy after the debris that caused Vettel’s puncture was fined £25,000 and banned from interfering in the final race of the season.

Vettel entered the second corner on the opening lap, side by side with the debris who was penalised for what stewards said was an avoidable collision.

It is not the first time the debris has been in trouble this season after it was warned for making more than two defensive moves whilst defending against Kobayashi at the Hungarian GP earlier in the year.

Red Bull mechanics explained to F1banter – “The debris was 100% at fault and poor Seb didn’t have a chance going into turn 2. That incident aside, Seb managed to completely f*ck up the floor, exhaust and wishbone on the way back to the pits. Thanks to that little pr*ck we missed Harry Hill’s TV burp and we were working on repairs well into the night.”

The debris caused controversy after the race when asked by BBC’s Lee McKenzie why he thought he had been penalised – “I’m not sure really. Maybe it’s because I am black. I don’t know” said the debris who was then sent to the stewards office for the second time.

Previous to the retirement, Vettel held the record as the only driver to finish every race so far in the 2012 season.

This week a section of the Abu Dhabi pit wall came forward and explained what it saw – “I had a great view, I always do, and it was clear that the debris was to blame. Sebastian had the racing line and the debris should have backed out of turn 2. You could see the collision was about to happen and I just stood there, cemented to the spot waiting for the moment they collided. It was tense stuff but luckily neither the debris nor Vettel careered towards me. Otherwise I wouldn’t be standing here talking to you now.”

F1banter looks forward to welcoming back the debris for the 2012 season.

Good article but an elementary error....."2012"? Or am I missing some humour here?

Heating his rear tyres on the grid was the cause of the tyre failure. The long hold contributed-got it too hot. The puff of smoke was tyre related.
