I have noticed that some people have asked how things are pronunced. Has anyone got any good stories about mispronunciation of something that is embarassing?

I have 2 stories the 1st one is that I bought something on ebay, (this was before I had a sat nav) so off I went to pick it (I am a cheapskate and did not want to pay the postage) After getting lost I decided to stop and ask for directions.

The man looked at me blankly and said he had no idea where "By-Chest-Er" was.

It turns out that Bichester is Bis-star.

In English classes i used to make wrong pronounciations which wouldnt make it embarassing at all.Now i seldom do that when i speak in English.

In Turkish,since things are read as they are written i dont have the possibility of making lots of mistakes but sometimes vowels are read longer or shorter.When i make a mistake of that it is kinda funny.

In high school I was once asked a question in regards to where this author was born...the answer was Ohio right?

Well I pronounced it as "OHEEOO".

So everyones like "huh"...and a friend tried to help out asking "Tokyo?" and finally I spelled it out and he was like ITS OHIO DUDE!!!

Pretty embarassing. Never completely got over that.

Tsk Americans and their pronunciations! What is it with Simon and Garfunkel pronouncing Scarborough as "ScarBORO" in their version of the ancient folk song Scarborough Fair?!?!?!

Instead of Scabbyborough. Americans mispronouncing words and seeing letters in words that are not there really annoys the hell out of me. IT'S TOMATO, NOT TOMAYTOE!!!!

Given that I am near perfect in every way I'm struggling to think of any but I once phone a company to book a cherrypicker to look at the roof of a property in Peterhead and gave the adress of Catto Driver over the phone, only I pronouced it Caito but it turned out it is pronounced as it is spelt. That's it.

Well here's a few howlers I'm willing to admit to:

* I once thought Arkansas was pronounced how it's spelt...instead of Arkansaw

* As a child I went on a holiday to a farm in Yorkshire called Madgett's Farm...I fully believed it was pronounced Mad Get's farm....

* When I first ever read the name Rubens Barrichello, I thought it was pronounced BA-RAch-Elloh

* And as for Jacques Villeneuve, at first glance, I thought it was Jack-Quez Villain-Uooov

Oh dear, I'm certain there's more.....

Mis pronunciations are a fault of the English language.

In work we where part of a multi million pound contract, we where the 1st place to recieve the equipment. So to start the meeting I said

"I would like to thank Tails for turning up and looking forward to meeting working with them." there was a lot of sideways glances at that moment.

The manager of Thales then said "We at 'Tal-Is' look forward to working with you too"

Spending a lot of time in London, you come across tourists and you find they can't pronounce anything right. Here's a list of the most common mistakes;

* Southwark
* Marylebone
* Slough
* Clerkenwell
* Marshalsea Debtors Gaol
* Borough
* Holborn

Mind you, this is nothing compared to even bigger howlers... such as when people confuse London Bridge and Tower Bridge... my goodness, they couldn't be more different... and they're only NEXT to each other!!!!!
