I know this will spark a debate and am curious to see opinions. So JB isnt going to ferrari, who will be #1 and #2 at MC? Maybe depends on how the season ends, who has the most potential and how many problems a driver brings to the team. Read on.........

1 of 1.....Jenson Button believes it is best to have a No 1 driver and a No 2 driver if you want to win the World Championship.

The World Motor Sport Council's decision to scrap the ban on team orders from this season onwards means team can now openly back one driver up to the hilt. Although Ferrari have never publicly stated that Fernando Alonso is their No 1 driver and Felipe Massa their No 2, they have made no secret of the fact that the Spaniard is their go-to guy in terms of challenging for the Championship.

McLaren on the other hand have always maintained that both their drivers are equal.

Button, though, feels when it comes to battling for the title, it's best to put all your eggs in one basket.

"The best way for a team to win the World Championship would be probably be to have a No 1 driver and a No 2 driver who is happy to be a No 2. We do not have this at McLaren," he told Germany's Welt Online.

He added that despite the desire to beat your team-mate, there are never any hard feelings when Lewis Hamilton wins a race.

"If I cannot win then I am pleased if he wins. I'm like: 'Wow, unlike you he has really done a good job'. Conversely it will be exactly the same because we drive for the same team. A victory is always good for the mood at the team," the 31-year-old said.

When asked to highlight the difference between his and Hamilton's driving styles, Button replied: "Lewis is very good. Even if his car is not perfect, he makes more of these opportunities than I do. I, on the other hand, feel uncomfortable in a car that does not suit to my wishes or ideas."

Button has in recent weeks been linked with a move to Ferrari in 2013, but he once again played down the reports.

"Who knows what the future holds," he said. "If I have the chance to win another World Championship with a team instead of losing one at Ferrari, then Ferrari would not be an option. For me it does not depend on the name, the emotion or the legend, but on the possibilities. In other words, if I were at the end of my career and never drove for Ferrari, I would not be sad."

Hmmm. Button was very pleased McLaren didnt operate a one /two policy when he first signed with them. Wonder why he's changed his mind?:hehe:

There is no 1 and 2 at McLaren.
His comments on the subject were an observation on the best way to win titles. Nothing more nothing less.

So he is saying that MC arent going about it the right way with not having a 1 or 2? He didnt say this for no reason at all

As is always the case when it comes to F1, people read quotes and assume drivers just call press conferences so they can be heard. He was asked a question during an interview for the German newspaper and gave his answer on the subject. Simple. He is not asking for this to be the case at McLaren.

Now you, like many out there can read more into it than there is. That is fine by me.

Off topic but my wife hates Button and its nothing to do with his driving. We live in the US and most of the GPs come on at 8am(European ones). I forgot which one it was but my wife fell back asleep during a race and had a dream that Button was chasing her with a knife. Pretty funny to us and we always make a joke about it when they show him. Maybe Massa can "destory" Buttons race once for my wife??? Just wanted to share the story.

He is right, unless you have a absolutely dominant car; like the Red Bull; winning a title is unlikely with the two drivers in a team taking points off each other. But having read the interview; he made it clear that it's not the way McLaren operate and that's probably a big part of why he re-signed for McLaren. If he did depart for Ferrari he knows that more than likely he would be the #2 driver given that Alonso has pledged his long term future to Maranello, Ferrari want a fast driver that can finish immediately behind Alonso to gain maximum points for the team championship!

Isn't Webber the one finishing immediately behind Alonso most this year?

Unless you're able to dominate like red bull, the only way to compete with other teams running a 1 2 policy is to do the same, maybe red bull do I dunno. Maybe Mclaren could give equal support for the first 1/4 of the season or something and say they'll support whoever's ahead or shows more potential with the car from that point on. Equal support for both drivers throughout the season isn't gonna win them any titles.

Maybe jens doesnt want another title. maybe he wants a change of policy now, who knows. But even if McLaren did a Uturn on their policy(and I dont think for one minute they would) I doubt it would go the way jens would prefer. Ron still has a finger in the pie.
Lewis I think would be happy with the 50/ 50 but with a car closer to the best one. From that point of strength I dont think he believes a team mate would trouble him.
