I haven't seen anything much this year to suggest that 2012 won't be any different!

Obviously not. We're still midway through the current season! Testing for next season hasn't even started!

You'll have to wait till next March for the real form to be revealed.

Is Balls out an 8th gear dodbsy?

Interesting bit of trivia, that. As with "balls to the wall," the "balls" referred to in "balls-out" are mechanical, not anatomical. Both phrases hearken back to centrifugal governours, which counterbalanced the rotating inertia of weighted balls against spring tension.

When the device was operating at maximum RPMs, its balls were said to be "to the wall."

^^ The explanation for the phrase I've always heard is that multi-engined airplanes had throttle controls with rounded balls. When pushed forward "towards the wall" they were at maximum throttle, therefor the saying.

The two phrases are different and have different origins - and you're both right.

"Balls to the wall" came from fighter plane controls and "balls out" refers to governors.

Try saying that again Robby....now THAT's how you destroy someone's race, bust the tyre up nicely.
