Renault has been fined €7,500 (£6,500) for providing Bruno Senna with inaccurate information during the Singapore Grand Prix. The night race in Marina Bay proved to be the worst of the year for the Enstone-based team, with Senna finishing 15th as team-mate Vitaly Petrov struggled to 17th behind the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen.

An official report from the FIA-appointed stewards, released at 11:45pm local time and regarding an incident which took place 70 minutes into the race, was released after Renault informed Senna that the car ahead – the Sauber of Sergio Pérez – was on the same lap; Senna, who was actually a lap down, duly tried to overtake and contact was made between the two cars.

The stewards’ report reads as follows:

‘The team failed to inform the driver of his correct race position which lead to an avoidable collision with Car No. 17 Sergio Pérez.’

Curious.

So if Senna had touched Perez whilst knowingly attempting to unlap himself then that would have been OK? Or not? Taking this logic to the extreme, once you are lapped, if you unlap yourself you will immediately be blue-flagged and must yield to the driver that you've just overtaken. Might as well retire once you've been lapped.

Your liberal use of logic is making my head hurt. This has to be one of the weirder penalties this year for sure.

Seems the whole weekend was a big disappointment for Renault
This incident just shows what a mess that team is.

You do have to watch out with that kind of maneuvers, remember Eddie Irvine and Ayrton Senna back in Suzuka 1993. :D

Maybe the FIA coffers were running low so they called up some obscure rule to get some more funds!

Same thing crossed my mind.................perhaps mnmracer has a transcript of pit to driver conversation.

This is absolutely insane. I agree with the original poster. This is a failing of the blue flag system (which is there for good reason otherwise), make the pass and then you become a blue light special and need to slow down to let the car lap you.

What does it matter if you are on the same lap. If you are faster, pass the car and get on with it. arrrgggghhh

What would happen if it wasn't a sauber and say it was an HRT? Even though senna would have been in a different world of speed, he would not be allowed to pass the HRT because he techinally is a LAP DOWN?
