ESPN F1:
Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that South Africa and Mexico are next on his wish list of future Formula One destinations.

This year will see the inaugural Indian Grand Prix at the end of October, before the sport returns to the USA in 2012 and expands into Russia in 2014. South Africa and Mexico both held races until the early 1990s and Ecclestone is keen to work with projects in those countries to see F1 return.

"After Russia I would like to go to South Africa and Mexico," he told the Independent newspaper. "Both countries are trying to do something." And despite its economic problems, Ecclestone was quoted as saying: "Greece are also trying to do a Formula One race. The Germans will lend them some money".

The F1 supremo is also confident there will be a full-calendar of 20 races in 2012 after getting assurances that next year's Bahrain Grand Prix will go ahead on April 22.

"I spoke to the Bahrainis yesterday and they said everything is going to be fine," he said. "I hope they are right for their sake, not ours."

The Bahrain Grand Prix was originally postponed this year after martial law was declared in the island kingdom and then cancelled altogether when a date could not be agreed upon to reschedule the race. However, Ecclestone revealed that the cancellation did not cost the Formula One Group any money as the Bahrian government still paid the hosting fee, estimated to be worth £25 million by the Independent.

"I don't think turnover will be down this year. I think it will be flat because we were paid for Bahrain. I said we will give them the money back and they said don't bother." He added: "I think the turnover and profit will be more or less the same as 2010."

South Africa (maybe Kyalami?) and Mexico

You can only have around 20 Grand Prixs' before the teams complain, you have 20 now and your looking at 5 more destinations, whats going on?

Perhaps more back to back races is a good idea.

Like I said - they should pick names out of hat for 20 grand prix's each season, but keep the crown jewels.

Thats actually a great idea, infact, its such a great idea, that you can be guaranteed it will never be implemented in F1!

And not just twenty, they cant moan about "tough" seasons with all that flying, when theres one race every two weeks,

- Spend some of the millions you spend on drivers, or spend some of your pay drivers money to cover the cost of travelling

- Do about 6 back to back weekends at grand prix tracks that are close to each other

- Organise the calender so that if you want brazil to be the last race, all north/south american races are in the final part of the calender

Just stop being so unorganised and unefficient about it all, and you can easily manage twenty plus grand prixs and still have holidays and off season time.

F1 should have a race in Africa really. Global championship and all that. I love the Hermanos track in Mexico too, good if it goes back there.

Not sure that's a good idea as it's not really real world practical. It's an organizational nightmare actually.

They should ditch the European round and also Bahrain to make way for these two, as Scotty said F1 should have an African round. And even more American rounds is good also.

way too random for such huge events like F1 GP's.

but yeah, instead of looking for more cities to host a GP, Bernie SHOULD be discussing how to have more GP's in a season without pissing off the teams.

I agree that the calendar would benefit from having Africa with a slot. Mexico is another grand location. I'm in favour of those places. I'd ditch the dire circuits in Spain for a start... :irked:

Who's to say the tracks in Africa or Mexico won't be equally dire?

They could be, if they're not tried and tested ones. But we've known that Barcelona and Valencia are dire for quite some time now....

Cause the chances are the two tracks they'd use have held F1 races before!

I'm not opposed to circuits that alternate every two years. It solves a lot of problems actually. It would drive up attendance for the year the race is held in that location, perhaps even making some circuits profitable that currently aren't.

Then you have to have some sort of logistical planning. The fact that races on back to back weekend because of proximity to one another is only half the issue. There is still tons of equipment that has to be shipped in advance and there are duplicates, perhaps even triplicates of some pieces of equipment. Customs, food services and local PR events are also factored in, so the reality that two back to back venues may have to be worked in parallel by separate crews in order for everything to be prepared.
