Nice to see him with a good ride. He is a damn fine driver and I think he will challenge Lewis.

Kovalainen will do well in the McLaren, hopefully he'll be able to carry his good form from the 2nd half of last season into next year and challenge for wins. :)

From autosport.com:

Kovalainen confirmed at McLaren

By Jonathan Noble Friday, December 14th 2007, 15:12 GMT

Heikki Kovalainen has been confirmed as Lewis Hamilton's new teammate at McLaren for next year.

The Finn joins the Woking-based outfit on a long-term deal after an impressive debut season with Renault, and McLaren management are convinced that he and Hamilton will make a 'formidable' combination for 2008.

The team have also confirmed that Pedro de la Rosa will remain as third driver, with Gary Paffett staying on board as tester.

McLaren F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh said: "We had a number of options open to us and as always we want to make sure that we have the most competitive driver line-up and I think that Lewis and Heikki will be a formidable combination.

"Both enjoyed great rookie seasons in 2007 and share a genuine passion for winning and being the best. Heikki made a strong impression and Lewis' performance so far has been outstanding and speaks for itself.

"I am confident that they will push each other on track and work well together off track. In addition with Pedro remaining our primary test driver alongside Gary, we really have a strong package and look forward to 2008."

Kovalainen found himself out of a job at Renault after the team opted for Nelson Piquet Jr. to be Fernando Alonso's new teammate. But he is delighted at his new opportunity, especially as it means he will follow in the footsteps of compatriots Mika Hakkinen and Kimi Raikkonen.

"I am so excited to join a team like Vodafone McLaren Mercedes," said Heikki. "So far I have been blown away by the dedication and commitment to winning which is clear through the entire organisation and I am really excited about our joint future.

"As a Finn it's an honour for me to follow in Mika and Kimi's footsteps. I haven't really spent a lot of time with Lewis so far but from what I know I think we will work well together and do our best for the team."

Kovalainen's new teammate Hamilton is equally looking forward to the arrival of the Finn, having endured a few tough moments with Alonso last year.

"As soon as the chequered flag went in Brazil I began to count down the days until Australia," said Hamilton. "I am really looking forward to 2008 and working with Heikki as my teammate.

"Together with the team we will do everything we can to ensure that our Championship challenge is as strong and focused as possible. My first year in Formula One was incredible and I was so fortunate to spend it with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and I hope that Heikki will enjoy his first year with the team as much as I did mine."

I think it was the worst kept secret in Formula One. Personally, I'm pretty chuffed. Both drivers have a talent and get on well. Some have said they may lack a little in terms of car setup, but I'm not certain and anything they do lack will soon come. You have to think about the future.

Yeah, considering the technical hindrance from the spy saga McLaren should aim for points in the first half of 2008, some wins in the 2nd half and an all out attack 2009.

I'm sure they are running an evolution of their 2007 car during 2008 and putting most of their resources into the 2009 car...

I'm very happy for Heikki now he has an opportunity in only his second year at winning a race. I'm also happy that RD made a wise choice for the 2nd seat.

He is very talent and clever guy. Next season will be very exciting. It doesn´t matter who will win, as long as the WDC is Heikki, Lewis or Kimi :D
I truly believe that Heikki and Lewis become friends and coop drivers in McLaren, because they are both teamworkers, so watch your mirrors Kimi, they are coming LOL

Welcome Wolwerine from North

congrats to Heikki roll on 2008 Australia GP

demure i think with the freeze on the components they have set they should aim for wins in the first half and points in the second as the second half is where everyone will be putting in new components etc

a question though what if McLaren come up with a radically different idea to what Ferrari have if they take it to Charlie Whiting will they be allowed to test it?

Heikki's just a geniunely nice guy so i really hope this works out. I can see there being much more friendship between Heikki and Lewis than there was with Alonso in the picture. Argh I just want the new season to arrive!

I am looking forward to the Heikki' V Hammy dual, two young guns going for it.
Let alone all the other duals on the track because of the spice in 2007.
Hopefully McLaren are not to development hindered in 2008 & are competitive.
Nothing better than it going down to the wire like this year.

No they will probably only be hindered just enough to stop them winning, Wouldnt want to make it look too obvious. Ooops too late  It already looks obvious. Shame next season could have been a damn good one
