Heikki Kovalainen is closing in on the second seat at McLaren for next year, autosport.com has learned, in a move that could see him replace Fernando Alonso for a second year running.

The Finn was handed his debut in Formula One this year at Renault as replacement for Alonso, but lost out on that drive last week when the French car manufacturer opted for Nelson Piquet Jr. as the returning Spaniard's teammate.

And now, although he has lost his seat at Renault, he could yet again follow in Alonso's footsteps and take the two-time world champion's seat that he has left vacant following his split with McLaren.

After losing out on the Renault driver, Kovalainen recently said that he had two 'interesting' offers to remain in F1, which were believed to be McLaren and Toyota.

It now appears that McLaren are edging closer to settling on Kovalainen instead of promoting one of their test drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Gary Paffett.

Some sources have suggested that a deal between McLaren and Kovalainen is already in place, but this has not been confirmed.

The speculation about Kovalainen landing the McLaren drive increased on Friday morning, however, with McLaren F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh making is clear that the team were seriously considering him.

"I think Heikki looks like a very interesting driver," Whitmarsh told the Guardian newspaper.

Kovalainen's inclusion in the McLaren line-up will be a big blow to de la Rosa, who had emerged as a strong contender to be Hamilton's teammate in 2008.

The Spaniard told El Pais newspaper on Thursday that he expected a decision within a week.

"Right now two people are up for the seat, and I guess we will soon know who the second driver will be, in less than a week," he said.

"If they are taking their time is because they are thinking hard about it, although if it was up to me the decision would have been made already.

"I prefer to be cautious and don't get my hopes up. There were a lot of candidates initially and now there are not that many. I guess everything will be known in a week."

Pedro, you are simply not McLaren (or any self-respecting team) standard. You're a test driver for a reason. Arguably, nobody should know the car better than you and, despite that, you've been trounced by Raikkonen etc. on the time sheets and in the Grands Prix. You are not to get too confident.

After a shaky start, Kovalainen has shown himself to be a very capable driver. Why would any team ever turn him down in favour of somebody like de la Rosa.

Hamilton may not have enough drives under his belt to give the required feedback for car setup. Pedro would be a good option if that's what they are concerned about.

a ferrari fan worried that Kovi in a Mclaren will interfere with Ferrari plans for 1-2's at every grand prix? :) its a simple decision kovi will be able to challenge the Ferrari's at the front and win races. de la rosa will not. put kovi in the car

Well demure has a point both Hamilton and Kovalainen will only be sophmores(in American slang - thats 2nd year hey tex?) so abit of experience is what they need. but who knows McLaren may be looking further ahead than just next season.

PS McLaren needs a Fin in their lineup its just natural ;)

It's true that both Hamilton and Kovalainen lack experience, but both are talented guys and it's also important to take into account the future. 2009 will be an uncertan year for McLaren anyway. I'm not expecting too much given the lack of development on some parts of the car and general McLaren inconsistency. It may not be a bad year to have two have two inexperienced drivers. In saying all this, however, I'm not sure it's quite true. Hamilton out-performed Alonso, supposedly a master at car setup, even after Alonso's garage stopped sharing data with Hamilton, and Kovalainen put Fisichella in the shade for at least two thirds of the championship when he got settled.

Yes that is true about Alonso's garage stopping the sharing and Hamilton still getting a good setup.
i think the true art of car setup is done by the engineers, all the drivers have to do is communicate whats going on in the cockpit to the engineers and evaluate what adjustments to make, which I see Hamilton being very capable of.

If I were McLaren I would be writing off 2008 and use it as a year of regrouping, put Kovi in the car and let them both learn how to set it up.

Even if Hamilton comparable to a God when it comes to setting up the car, I fear one year just isn't enough.

I remember Schumacher being able to squeeze another .5 second a lap out of the car at Ferrari only after he'd used Rubens' setup parameters. By that stage he was a seasoned F1 driver, it takes time to truly know what you are doing when it comes to car setup.

It will be a risk for McLaren to run Kovi, but hey, it might pay off.
