Ill have a look into them.....

They were ok up to a point but like all prog rock they were far too self indulgant and the tunes were far far far too long.

You must be trying to get me banned as soon as possible andrew lol :hehe:

No such thing as too long, you know what Shine on you crazy diamond is, its a 26 minute long song from Pink Floyd, and every second is magical goodness, granted its split into two songs, SOYCD pt 1 and 2, Pink Floyds songs freuently made the 7 minute mark, Led Zeppelins songs are on average about 6 minutes long, rolling stones music style means songs a realatively short, 3/4 minutes, good music isnt chained to short songs.

Dont get the self indulgent thing, explain using Pink Floyd as an example, plus, when your taking tokes on a tasty rizla doobie, the longer the song the better, you dont want gaps ruining your "trip" which is why Dark side of the moon is such a classic albulm, 45 minutes of seamless transition between songs, its magic.

Granted you definitely dont need drugs to enjoy music, but if you can you should try it once. Just having a hard days work getting home, plonking on the sofa with whiskey and a smoke is good enough....

I've nothing against long songs. I've got a live version of Dazed and Confused that goes on for about 20 minutes and it's fantastic! There are a few New Order songs which are basically 10 minute instrumentals. Maybe it's just that I don't like ELP.

Blue Monday and True Faith are 2 of the few songs that everytime I listen to them I want them to be twice as long! I tend to get bored if a tune goes on too long or if there is nothing to get me interested or if it is just the same thing over and over again. For me Blue Monday would be just another song (albeit a good one) if it wasn't for the 6 string bass riffs.

As for the self indulgant thing, I saw a programme on prog rock a while back and the whole genre really seemed to get far too big and way over the top. Rick Wakeman's fancy capes were the tip of the iceberg! :hehe:

I'll take your word on the drug element. Far too expensive! Seriously, I would never touch that kind of stuff and I honestly don't know and don't want to know where to go to buy that kind of stuff.

part of rock music was the costumes and s***, christ watch led zeppelins 73 madison square garden gig, page is wearing flares with shiny moons and starts and a too small unbuttoned black jacket, and plant is wearin jeans you can literally see his package staring at you, with a girls blouse.

then in knebworth 1979 jimmy plays wearing white trousers, black belt and a floppy fully buttoned long sleeve blue shirt :rofl:

Best part is they never looked anything less then total f*cking umpalumpa gods.

As for drugs, i was the same, never wanted to touch them, then i thought try everything once, and it werent bad, and i dont buy mine from direct dealers i get mine from a hippie grower that only sells to non-chavs lolol.

Bands like Muse dont cut it cause the lyrics are total crud, its just catchy rock instruments, and even taht is basic beyond belief.

Gonna have to disagree with you there. Don't get me wrong, the other artists you list are all awesome... I just don't see how you can say Muse's lyrics and instrumentals are so "basic" just after listing the Stones as one of your pillars.

Let me try and enlighten you.

Starfucker lyrics

Baby, baby, I've been so sad since you've been gone
way back to New York City
where you do belong
Honey, I missed your two tongue kisses,
legs wrapped around me tight
If I ever get back to Fun City, girl,
I'm gonna make you scream all night.

Honey, honey, call me on the telephone,
I know you're movin' out to Hollywood
with your can of tasty foam
All those beat up friends of mine
got to get in their goods
And lead guitars and movie stars
get their tongues beneath your hood.

Yeah! You're a star duck, star duck, star duck, star duck, star
yeah, a star duck, star duck, star duck, star duck, star,
a star duck, star duck, star duck, star duck star.

Yeah, I heard about you Polaroid's,
now that's what I call obscene,
your tricks with fruit was kind a cute,
I bet you keep your cat clean.

Yeah, Ali McGraw got mad with you
for givin' head to Steve McQueen,
yeah, you and me we made a pretty pair,
ballin' through the Silver Screen.
Honey, I'm open to anything
I don't know where to draw the line.
Yeah, I'm makin' bets that you don't get
John Wayne before he dies.

Yeah! You're a star duck, star duck, star duck, star duck, star
yeah, a star duck, star duck, star duck, star duck, star,
a star duck, star duck, star duck, star duck star.

Notes to take: 1, its a song about something, and about something of personal experience, dirty groupies in the 70's

2. If you listen to the actual song its a clever take on Chuck Berrys famous Johnny B goode intro, and the timing signatures in the song only accomplished rhythm players can manage.

It's bugging me
Grating me
And twisting me around
Yeah, I'm endlessly
Caving in
And turning inside out

'Cause I want it now
I want it now
Give me your heart and your soul
And I'm breaking out
I'm breaking out
Last chance to lose control

It's holding me, morphing me
And forcing me to strive
To be endlessly cold within
And dreaming I'm alive

'Cause I want it now
I want it now
Give me your heart and your soul
I'm not breaking down
I'm breaking out
Last chance to lose control

And I want you now
I want you now
I feel my heart implode
And I'm breaking out
Escaping now
Feeling my faith erode

Notes to take: What on earth are the lyrics about, incoherent and pointless, the band relies far too much on creating riffs and basslines played at obscene volume levels to mask the lack in other areas, not to mention their poor on stage persona, where other rock bands ooze rebellion and umpalumpa appeal, the three piece nerdy looking muse appear to be the two anorexics and the fat bassist, with a frontman who acts the typical modern headbanging constant improvisation and overused tremelo bar to songs needed to mask their lacking in other areas.

i could just as easily make a similar post about "Satisfaction". That's my point.

Difference is The Stones were the forefathers of modern music full stop. That song came out in.....64 i think youd think 40 odd years later music would have evolved, but apparently turning the volume up and adding a little bravado guitar fills is music, not to mention good music, or even better music.

Your right about Satisfaction, but then this could go onto the Beatles too could it not, hey jude is awful repetitive and its probably one of the top 50 songs of all time, context is everything.

Muse are popular fine, and each to their own, but they fall well short of what id calla top band, catchy riffs and beats only do so much.

That's all I was getting at; we could cherrypick crap songs from various artists all day and wind up right back where we started. I happen to think more highly of Muse than you do, but hey, there's no accounting for taste.

You like the Beatles, ELP and you're a sworn Hamiltonian. We both know the answer to that question. It would be an insult to our collective intelligence to answer this question as we all know the answer is a resounding yes.

Sorry, couldn't resist. You guys gotta stop setting me up like this!

I believe the democratic way to put it is "we have different taste".

Only very slightly, because like I said, I thoroughly enjoy most of the other artists you listed.

I couldn't pick a strict top 3. Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers would be 2 of the bands though. Other bands i love and could easily take that final spot or at least make a 'top 10' for me...

Jimi Hendrix
Led Zeppelin
Metallica
Nirvana
Guns n' Roses
AC/DC
John Frusciante
Cream
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Queens of the Stone Age
Megadeth
Rage Against the Machine
Rolling Stones
System of a Down
Them Crooked Vultures
Van Halen
Talking Heads
