Pirelli is considering reintroducing qualifying-specific tyres next season, but only if it gets approval from the teams.

Qualifying tyres were last used in Formula One in 1991 and were designed to give drivers maximum performance for just one lap. They were developed during a period of competition between tyre manufacturers and banned by the FIA when Pirelli left the sport and Good Year remained as the sole tyre supplier.

"We've put the idea of qualifying tyres to the teams and we will get their feedback," Hembery told Autosport magazine. "If they don't want to do it, we won't do it. It might be a step too far for next year and too much for the teams to take on board, but it's something that we have offered.

"We know that the public likes the idea of a qualifying tyre and drivers rather like the thrill of having a qualifying tyre and chasing that ultimate lap. It's a one-shot, zero-mistake tyre so it builds up the tension. It would be an extreme, one-hit tyre, two seconds a lap quicker."

The plan could be a solution to the problem of drivers staying in the pits during qualifying sessions in order to save tyres for the race. On several occasions this year, drivers in the final session of qualifying have opted not to set a time in the belief that an extra set of fresh option tyres is worth more than an extra grid slot on Sunday. What's more the battle for pole has often been cut short as one car is clearly more dominant than the others and rivals choose to save tyres.

However, Bernie Ecclestone has a different take on the problem. "The solution for that is very simple: to provide more sets of tyres to the drivers," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this week.

theoretically in Q3 we will see a return of the one lap Qualifying we saw a few years back. Sure we would see faster qualifying times but at the expense of even less laps than they currently do.

Not sure I get why you say that. I imagine they'll get more than one set of those quali tires so that in Q3 they could run 2-3 such ultra-laps.

Given what he said. If they had a truck load wheres the tension?

The tension comes from the fact that it's only good for one hot lap - you screw that one up, you have to come in for a new set. There's only time for so many tire changes in the 10-minute Q3.

Oh goody! The tyre reg's are getting to be even more ridiculous than they already are(!)

The single lap qualifying was a complete turn off and there was really no point in watching, just read the results afterwards. The 3 part qualifying is just bearable but I really miss the old 1 hour session with 12 laps per driver and they can do what the hell they liked. The same goes for the tyres.

Thank goodness for MotoGP!

Quali tyres? Yeah, why the hell not. Let's see just how damn quick we can get the cars to go round a track, it's the name of the game after all

Sounds like a grand idea. I doubt it will be anything like the crappy 1-lap system, because of the time given to the drivers allows more than that.

Pirelli are doing wonders for this sport :D

I think this sounds good :D . From what I gather there may only be one or two sets(dont think its all decided yet) but they will be about 2secs a lap quicker :yikes: So the tyre will have to be saved for an all out lap in Q3(or to get through to Q2 or Q3 in the the case of the teams further down the grid). The drivers will not have been able to practse on it (excpet possibly one run on the other set in the morning). So they dont really know how it will behave. They have to get on it immediately and adapt to how it performs. YUMMY YUMMY!!!!

To add to the strategy, all drivers who qualify on the qualy tyres in the top 10 have to start on it (They would only have to use 1 of the 2 types of race tyre though aswell as the qualy tyre :))

No, I think if they bring in the quali tyre, the 'starting on the tyre you qualified on' rule would be obsolete. These quali tyres only last one lap, so the drivers would be free to choose any tyre...unless they bring in some other rule.

Can you imagine them having to start the race on tyres that only last 1 lap? :hehe:
