Lewis is waaay too arrogant and this constantly surfaces during his pit conversations. Dont think this is a positive-constructive atmosphere. I dont care about Lewis and his engineer... but i think when things arent going 100% well things get pretty tense rather than constructive.

Yeah course Flea, Lewis is at fault here. If you dont care about lewis and his engineer why are you making these comments? I wish you every success with your career as an engineer but doubt you'll ever get anywhere near a driver like lewis with your attitude.

I dont think the 'lame' bits help at all, thats what I mean. I guess you wouldnt want to engineer lewis... but if you do I reckon you'd be more human than his current guy.

Honestly, if i ever got to F1 i wouldn't actually care which driver! Anyway, haven't even gotten near that point yet... :hehe:

You have to understand, the engineers have access to huge amounts of data during races that the drivers don't, these guys don't just say stuff to the drivers for the hell of it or for no reason. Take Valencia as a good example, the engineer would be able to see the tyre temps and such on the car at that point in the race and probably have a better idea of how the tyres may wear given all the data gathered through practice. The driver wouldn't have any of this info and is therefore in nowhere near as informed a position to judge how to drive the car (in that respect, if you get me), so for me it makes perfect sense for such info to be relayed.

That said it can work the other way too, to an extent, in that sometimes you might hear a driver saying they have a handling problem in the car - perhaps seemingly useless info to be giving to the engineer, but if the driver says mentions these problems sometimes the engineers can suggest things the driver can change to help the problem. Does that make sense? Feel like i'm rambling to make the point now. :hehe: Also you mentioned a lack of info at Silverstone but really that would have in all likelihood been given, just not broadcast.

How does the engineer/mechanic/race engineer crew works?? how many engineers are working on each car/team what are their responsibilities and what are they doing during the race in order to transfer information back and forth to the pit wall?? (because all i see is the bunch of em sitting on the p its and only the race engineer looking a t telemetry on the pit wall).

There are dedicated engineers for specific areas of the cars (eg, engine, electronics, etc) and they'll relay relevant info to the race engineers (the guys on the pit wall) via radio should it need to be passed onto the drivers or whatever...

I didnt say Lewis was at fault. I say his arrogance surfaces and their atmosphere is not positive-constructive. Unfortunately, we dont get to hear their complete conversations, only the bits the media finds "interesting" for us to hear... but from the bits we do get to hear, i think its fair to say they really do need to work on their communication.

Seriously, the only times i hear Lewis saying something "nice" is when he wins. Otherwise its a wham-bam-slag-off.

When I say I dont care about him and his engineer, it means that to me it makes no difference what their relationship is like. To them, it does and it should, because they could get better results if they were able to work better.

I wouldnt like to work with a driver/person like him; its the same case as when he told Ron Dennis the "F** you" stuff... oh man, that would have been his last day at work. But who knows, if I were his engineer, we would probably communicate better... you see, i've never said its all Lewis' fault.

Dont worry, I dont think you'll be offered the job.

"Please dont talk to me when Im racing" Thats hardly a wham-bam-slag-off.

Ive never actually heard Lewis whinging on the phone to have his engineer move his team mate aside. Now if your talking arrogant......

Mostly with the McLaren drivers its just very business like-no relationship seems to be there. Thats both McLaren drivers. I think thet're missing a trick here.

Someone suggested the Massa Smedley relationship was condescending. I dont see it like that. Its a relationship, not just a business arrangement. They asked to work together and they get on like brothers. In that environment Smedley can say the "Felipe baby" things. There's trust there. Thats why Smedley hated telling him to move aside for the prima donna.

It's a real hilarity when fans of Alonso call Lewis Hamilton 'arrogant'. I mean, its just amazing comedy sometimes, I'm not complaining here.

I think they're very different actually. But anyway the discussion is about the engineers and their relationships with the drivers.

It's ok, we're still on topic. Both Alonso and Hamilton tell their engineers to shut-up far too much. The poor engineers are only trying to do their job!

oohhh Don't bet against it baby :)
[BTW i doubt i would ever; i'm a civil/hydraulic engineer not a motorsport engineer]

Funny how an "engineer" thread turns into a Hamilton vs Alonso thread

In such case: Alonso's engineer is better and faster than Lewis'. There, discussion settled. And while we're at it, the mechanics also.
