Williams technical director Sam Michael will stop travelling to grands prix following the race in Korea in October as part of the Williams restructuring.

Following a disappointing start to the season Michael resigned from his position to allow a new technical structure to be created, with the resignation coming in to effect at the end of the season. With Mike Coughlan appointed as new chief engineer, and later joined by Jason Somerville and Mark Gillan in the technical team, Michael said he is preparing to hand over the responsibilities as part of the changes.

"Most technical directors travel to races, but the structure that Williams is going for is not having a travelling technical director," Michael is quoted by Autosport. "There will be a chief operations engineer in Mark Gillan, so he is going to come to Japan and Korea, and be in the background to see how I operate for those two races. Then he will take over from there."

Despite the move Michael's contract runs until March 1 2012, and he admitted he is unsure what will happen following the handover.

"I definitely won't be at the races, but what is going to happen at the factory I don't know," he said.

I thought you meant Schumacher when I first opened this thread :hehe:

Yeah, Williams have never really hit great heights with Sam Michael, but that of course is not solely down to him. But both parties could do with a fresh change, and a gathering of thoughts.

As has been said above, other teams will most likely snap Michael up. The smaller teams will definitely be keen.

Ignoring Herr Schumacher... I think Sam Michael leaving Williams will be good for the team; some fresh blood is needed to rejuvenate the team, it's been a rough few years for Sir Frank's team, it must be hard for a racer like Williams to sit back and watch his team struggle to get into the top 10; new faces, new Renault engine, I'm hoping to see Williams regularly make it into Q3!

Back where they belong!!! At the front.

I would love to see that happen; I generally don't support a team but if I were to support a team; it would be Williams; I have a soft spot for the Grove based team; ever since seeing Nigel Mansell win the drivers title in the FW14B during my first full season of watching F1. Given that history; it's amazing that Williams have not won a race since 2004 in Brazil I believe it was!

Get new drivers as well :irked:

Should have stuck with their 2010 pairing until Rubens retires, by which time Nico should have been more than ready to be the team's lead driver. Then they could focus on some of the talent in Formula Two and bringing those up in to the team.
