This would be good for Virgin racing because they are around 5-7 seconds off the leaders at the end of qualifying and being back markers in the race. They would have better equipment and make them quicker, i think they have good drivers, but not such a good car compared to the likes of Red Bull , MC Laren and Fferari. So it would be a good boost for them in Formula1.

Merc already supply 3 teams (including themselves). Would a 4th be allowed or is there something in the rules limiting the number of teams that an engine manufacturer can supply?

The FIA have to approve more than three. I also think there's an issue with current customers. If I remember rightly, a switch to Mercedes for RBR was vetoed by the other Mercedes-engined teams.

I think that veto was simply because it was RBR... Virgin would have a lot more leeway.

So what do McLaren get out of this deal exactly? Me thinks they might get abit of a say in who drives in one of the seats in the future.

Mercedes had a big say in di Resta getting his Force India seat....they are effectively developing him for a Mercedes seat.

And the Ferrari/Sauber relationship is really good. Perez will be a future Ferrari driver (A member of the Ferrari Driving Academy). He is just developing at Sauber for now. Sauber got a decent driver and a whole lot of cash from a rich mexican from by signing him.

And we all know how Toro Rosso is the junior team for Red Bull.

Mercedes = Force India (di Resta)
Red Bull = Toro Rosso (Whole team)
Ferrari = Sauber (Perez)
McLaren = Marussia Virgin (???)

The odd one out is Renault, unless we can now class Williams or Lotus as there second.

perhaps the supply of 3 teams does not include the works team? Although not owned it could be said Renault is the works team even if they want to be known as Lotus.
