Spanish Media: Alonso to join Renault
10 December 2007
According to the Spanish media Fernando Alonso will be announced as Renault's 2008 driver within the next 48 hours. Alonso apparently has signed a two-year deal with the team and will be joined by Renault's Nelson Piquet jr. next season.

Was just watching BBC Sport on payTV and they announced above was official ???

It does indeed. I wouldn't mind Kovalainen at McLaren. Having taken a while to adjust, he showed some real promise at the end of the season. Alonso will do well at Renault with ole Flavio. Two sh1t talkers together.

Renault have their golden boy back again, they should be motivated next season...

Strange to see Flavio dip into his pockets, he's normally quite stingy with driver wages...

The most interesting aspect to this is Kovalainen. In normal circumstances I believe he would have stayed at Renault, because of FA who likes to be number 1 and no one else, they've let him go. Piquet won't put up much resistance in comparison for his first season.

Its official. But it really wasn't any surprise. He was only waiting for the results of the Renault hearing. Then just needed the weekend to make a final decision. Predictable like clockwork.

it's official and i'm not surprised, red bull and toyota were both full.. so we're going to see alonso and piquet (i don't know why, but i hate this boy, he has such a face..he always looks disgusted by anyone he talks with!) at reanult, maybe hamilton and sutil on mclaren? LH has always said he estimates the german..so there would be no space for kovalainen...

I felt Alonso moving back to Renault was inevitable as far back as the pitlane mishaps in Hungary. If Alonso thinks he's going to have an easy ride, I think he'll be wrong. Piquet Jr - unlike Hamilton - has an attitude problem inherited from his father and he'll give Alonso a really tough time.

Alonso's contract will probably have the "number 1 driver" clause written into it, but if anybody knows more about such clauses, it's got to be Piquet Sr who went to Williams for 1986 contracted as number 1 driver just as Nigel Mansell hit form and both were given equal treatment much to Piquet's distaste, so I can imagine he'll be encouraging his son to make ammends and beat Alonso.

Can anyone imagine Piquet Sr on the pit wall telling Flavio or Pat Symonds to get on the radio and make Alonso move over? :P

Kovalainen and Piquet Jr hated each other, and Piquet spoke out early on in the season saying why he should be in the racing seat and not Kovalainen. I'm expecting plenty more harsh words coming between the two next season.

Wow there seem's to be ALOT of hatred here for Piquet Sr. and some of it from people who never had the priveledge to watch him race  ! I must admit he was never even one of my favorite personality's but he is a three time WDC, I personaly witnessed magic from him a few time's, so give credit where credit is due. He KNOW'S how to play the GP game just as Keke does so dont discredit his guidance of Piquet Jr. so quickly or atleast before we see what Piquet Jr. can achieve his first season ON-TRACK ?

Piquet Jr. may be just as arrogant as his dad was when he was still racing, I cant say personaly, but on-track result's are what count's.
