Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve has said Formula One no longer interests him, even as a spectator.

Even though he has been loosely linked with several teams, he is now 40 and his career as an F1 driver seems over. But speaking to Reuters, he said the whole spectacle of the sport was now a turn off.

"I don't watch the races anymore," he said. "I'm done, for the first time ever. I just can't be bothered. Halfway through the race I'm yawning and it's really tough ... and I just get upset."

Villeneuve, who was recently been competing in NASCAR, said the races were too predictable, and he slammed the introduction of DRS.

"I really don't care to see overtaking with DRS," he said. "I prefer to see Lewis [Hamilton] going for it and sometimes it ends in tears but at least it's fun. All the other overtaking with the DRS, I'm just falling asleep. Useless. Boring. It's not even racing.

"People now think 'Oh, he's going to overtake me. Why bother?' And that's it. No excitement. Nothing."

Villeneuve also attacked the stewarding of races, claiming there was a policy of punishing genuine mistakes rather than poor driving. "That's wrong. Mistakes happen. You run into each other, that's life, that's racing and too bad. Then you see a lot of weaving and nasty stuff happening and there's no penalties for that. That's where it's wrong.

"You need to let the drivers go for it and if they bang wheels, too bad. It's fun, it's a good show, the fans are up in the grandstands and they can scream and shout about it. That's good, that's what you want."

He's absolutely right!!

If he bothered to still watch races, we should've started a petition to put him on board as a race steward. Instead of the mutts we have now. :irked:

Here's a BBC link to his comments: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula ... 027440.stm

It may only be available to UK users.

Like Eddie Irvine, Jacques Villeneuve is another faded rose who likes to spew controversial nonsense every now and then. However, his final point about the race stewards is correct. There ARE too many penalties and drivers SHOULD be allowed to bang wheels and throw one down in the inside. I would therefore support Villeneuve being a race steward.

However, his comments about the DRS and the sport being boring i don't agree with. As I've often said, I support DRS, because they allow us to see what people once moaned about not seeing - overtaking. You'll always get folk who are never satisfied, and Villeneuve seems like one of them. If he was still racing, he may well have had a different view...

DRS doesn't make overtaking EASY, it makes it POSSIBLE, and even though some races have indicated the former, it's part of a learning process. The races, for me, have become much more exciting thanks to the tyres and DRS.

I don't know, Jacques hasn't exactly covered himself in glory or respect in the last decade. Witness his latest escapade in Road America, where he made an bottom of himself. I am ashamed to think that at one time, he was relevant.

But Jacques dealt himself out of the Formula One culture and community by being greedy, selfish, arrogant, and making poor decisions. To think that this man who has exhibited the ability to make poor decisions should be considered as a steward is like asking for Krusty the Klown to head up the CIA.

Jacques's comments reflect the NA$CAR mentality he has exposed himself to. They have banging and crashing, excitement and thrills and spills. Even the occasional physical altercation. This is one thing that has always separated Formula One from NA$CAR, one to accept that "Rubbin' is racin'", versus the precision and grace and delicate balance of road racing where the goal is to bring the car home, intact.

I am sure that it has nothing to do with the fact he keeps trying to get back in and everyone says no. The only seat he can get in F1 anymore is trap 5 in the gents toilets at Abbey corner.
